In Saint Louis MO on August 12 1947 the monoplane Greater St Louis piloted by Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine circled Lambert field aiming to surpass the 554 hour endurance refueling record held by the Hunter brothers. They planned to stay aloft at least eight days beyond the current mark, with talks of continuing three weeks.
Elizabeth Cone of Huron Girl Scouts La Ke Tah troop 1 wins a major free trip as The Hellsite major winner in a $909 free trip contest run by Huron business leaders and The Evening Huronite. Several troops receive trips to Lake Byron Miller Camp De Ko Tah Lake Enemy Swim and more with plans for September convention and December Junior Short Course attendance.
The Chamber of Commerce announced nine reservations for space in the Huron building at the 1938 South Dakota State Fair. The manufacturing division led by Dale Thorn plans displays for Huron products with Clyde R. Smith as manager. Reserved firms include Huron Furnace Co, Sheldon Reese, Armour Packing, Star Sash and Boar Co, Comerford and Kooyman, Huron Construction, Worin & Colton, Fairmont Creamery, and the Evening Huronite.
Sheriff Lyda Larsen seeks the owner of a several years old Dodge coupe found abandoned at Nebraska Avenue and Sixth Street. Reported by Floyd Rouse of 437 Sixth Street Southwest, the vehicle had been there for some time and shows no evidence of loan or lawful use. Authorities request the owner come forward with proof of ownership and license details.
A stolen whippet coach belonging to A P Crown of 49 Wisconsin Avenue NW was reported to police this morning. The car with license plate 33376 was taken last night and no trace had been found by early today.

Ole Peterson of Helland pleaded guilty to assault with intent to do great bodily harm and was sentenced by Circuit Judge Alva E. Taylor to sixty days with hard labor. The incident involved striking a neighbor with a hammer during a quarrel over a son. Sheriff Kruse and State's Attorney Warxe transported him.
Chicago August 12 A dead man's shoes walked into a death mystery yesterday and cleared John Geary of suspicion of murder. The shoes belonged to Peter Kessering whose body was found in a northside alley. Geary had a quarrel with him hours before and was arrested. Col Calvin A Goddard criminologist analyzed sand and gravel from the roof beside which Kessering's body was found. It was believed Kessering climbed to the roof while intoxicated and fell to his death.
Fort Pierre to receive drilling gear capable of reaching 6 000 feet by October 2. Southwest Petroleum Co and South Dakota Development and Reining Coy say the new field equipment will enable deeper prospecting after a prior drill reached shallow sands.
Four young golfers progressed to the semi finals at the Huron Country Club as veterans faltered. Paul Harmon, 17, Mitchell High, defeated Dr. H L Saylor 2 up. Lee Butts beat Russell Bard 2 and 1. Otis Preston beat Ray Williamson 1 up. Harvard Noble defeated Harold Schrader 7 and 6. semifinals set for Wednesday with Harmon meeting Butts and Noble facing Preston.
Oswald Garrison Villard editor of The Nation argues a national economic program with government ownership of railroads pipelines and coal mines as a first step toward future policy He cites the Inland Waterways Corporation a War Department agency earning 125 000 annually for the national treasury and notes General Ashburns testimony of no political patronage during his five years as head of the company He calls for government control of natural resources and strict licensing to protect public rights while stressing fair rates for bona fide capital investments and opposing costly fees and lobby payments
The crop reporting board says South Dakota corn is below normal while spring wheat remains above average. August 1 yields show corn down 18 percent from 1929 and oats also lower. Weather nationwide eases heat with showers forecast in the Midwest Ohio and Potomac valleys.
Two 16 year old girls were detained after a failed kidnap and highway robbery in Detroit. They allegedly commandeered chauffeur Steve Schultz by brandishing a toy pistol, forced him from his car, and fled. The vehicle was later abandoned and the girls led police to the pistol they hid.
An unknown thief entered the house of Mr and Mrs C A Eby at 872 Wisconsin Avenue Southwest between 8 and 9 o clock last night but nothing was taken. The Eby's were at a neighbor's and returned to find no loot or damage.
Lieutenant W. W. Pace of Omaha is expected in Huron tomorrow to inspect the naval recruiting station, according to Quartermaster Cletus Packhan in charge at the Huron Statler. Pace was in Sioux Falls and Watertown yesterday and Aberdeen today.
