The New York Stock Exchange saw the most sweeping drop in its history as prices plunged after the Federal Reserve raised the rediscount rate from 5 to near 6 percent. Trading accelerated with 5,000 to 25,000 share blocks and total volume around 5.1 million, with U S Steel, Westinghouse, General Electric and many others tumbling 5 to 30 points and a mid day rally fading into further declines.

Boy’s Finger Crushed In Threshing Accident
Billy Butz a 12 year old son of Mr and Mrs Ray Butz of this city suffered a crushed middle finger in a threshing accident on the J T Larson farm. The machine started while he reached into the feeder. He was taken to Wessington Springs where a doctor found no injury to other fingers and he was reported as getting along as well as could be expected.

Heath Taken by Customs Agent in Detroit
Detroit August 8. John M. Heath, skipper of the cruiser Maxine and an elevator mechanic, was arrested at Michigan Central Station by special customs agents as he alighted from a Chicago train. Heath says he saw federal agent Richard Jim Sandilands fall overboard during a struggle while Sandilands searched his craft. Sandilands’ body was later found in the Detroit River.
