Day County Towns Get Federal Funds

Webster and other Day county towns will receive emergency highway funds allocated by population. Webster may get about 3000 to 10000 dollars for street repairs and storm sewer work. A portion of Day county funds is expected to fund a road north from Webster toward Fort Sisseton.

Ames Gets Credit For Being Home of Ravenous Hoppers

Ames, Aug. 1 Special report notes grasshopper stories reach peak in South Dakota. An Ames woman received a letter from a Madison friend asking if grasshoppers have eaten holes in houses and started to meet bedding and furniture. The Madison reply states attacks here have not reached that stage.

S F Election Is Called Off

Sioux Falls city commission rescinded a special bond election for August 22 without rescheduling. A PTA committee seeks 1400 signatures to trigger a petition for a combined school and city election. If completed this week, the election could be held September 5, per City Attorney Odean Hareid. The original July 17 resolution remains on record.

Three Injured In Automobile Crash Near Woonsocket

In Woonsocket on August 1 a car carrying Mrs. Stanley Peterson Mr. Bowman of Forestburg and others collided with a Brewer vehicle. The Petersons and Bowmans were injured and taken to Huron Hospital after veering into a ditch to avoid the Brewer car which turned north.

UPIERRE Aug 1 Employment Director J W Beckwith said state employes salaries were cut by 129 32L%3 in the first half of 1933 versus the same period in 1932. He reported total salaries 1 5d 088 18 for Jan 1 to June 30 1933 and 1 670 410 0L for the same period in 1932, noting savings came from department cooperation before July budget cuts and predicting larger savings in the second half of 1933.

Will Not Join 8 D Indian Reservations

Rep T B Weisner of Rapid City said federal Indian affairs officials do not plan consolidation of Standing Rock and Cheyenne reservations in South Dakota. He cited an unauthorized survey as the source of rumors and said no action will occur until after a full investigation with stakeholder input. Conservation camps benefiting 1050 Indians are underway or planned, including dam building and rodent control projects.

Wheat Yield Proves High in Local Field Near Buffalo Gap

At Buffalo Gap on August 1 a 30 acre creek bottom field yielded 20 bushels per acre for Jim Bowker, with plump high protein grain. Barley in nearby areas averaged ten bushels, while remaining wheat yields ranged three to ten. Farmers head and haul due to low grain growth, corn remains promising with rain needed, alfalfa seed prospects improve on the second cutting, and grasshoppers are increasing crop damage in some sections.

Auto crash near Rapid City claims Seneca woman

Mrs. Lucy Troughton, 67, of Seneca Kansas, died instantly when the tour car she rode in tipped over on a highway near Farmingdale. Her daughters Elizabeth Agnes and Thelma Deffenhaugh and another girl were injured but not seriously. The body was returned to Seneca for burial.

Yale August 1 Special Mrs Christ Walz who lives two miles south of Yale was surprised on her birthday by relatives. The evening included cards and conversation with prizes to card winners. Aberdeen Cafe Fire Destroys Building In Aberdeen

Fire of undetermined origin caused heavy damage to the Aberdeen Boston case shop estimated at 15 000 to 18 000 dollars. One firefighter Frank Hoe gel injured when trapped under debris as roof collapsed. Firemen battled for three hours to control flames around midnight. Insurance covered the loss. In a separate blaze the Cotton Club roadhouse near Aberdeen burned for about 2 000 dollars. John Gess alerted others but aid arrived late.
