Cattle on Feed Drops in 1931 Across Corn Belt
BROOKINGS, April 20. Cattle on feed for market in the corn belt states on April 1 totaled about 7 percent less than on the same date year ago, says C. J. Borum, federal agricultural specialist at State College. South Dakota's figure is 93 percent of last year's level. Nebraska and Minnesota show increases, reflecting their 1930 corn production. Stocker and feeder cattle shipments to the belt from July 1930 to March 13 were 11 percent below the year before, the second smallest in ten years. Three month shipments January to March fell over 20 percent, driven by fewer calves, cows, heifers, and light-weight steers, but heavy feeders over 9 pounds rose. The report notes marketing plans for April 1 similar to last year, with more emphasis on September or October after July.

Valley Springs Farmer Claims Early South Dakota Alfalfa Roots
VALLEY SPRINGS April 20. Farmer W W Bell of Valley Springs contends Minnehaha county, not the western district, should receive credit for introducing alfalfa to South Dakota farms. He says he brought the first seed in 1879 and sowed several farms between Valley Springs and Sioux Falls. Historians credit Captain Seth Bullock with west of the Missouri River planting in 1841 near Belle Fourche. Bell proposes a monument in Minnehaha county, near Beaver Creek Lutheran church, and details how he distributed seed after bringing two quarts from Stockton, California. Bell remains active on his half section farm breeding North Star sheep.
