Hundreds fight to save Mississippi levee at Knowltons Landing
Snow Lake Arkansas April 20 one hundred additional laborers recruited in Helena were en route to Knowltons Landing to join workers defending the Mississippi river levee. Government engineers reinforced a bulkhead at the danger point with timbers and sandbags while plans were made to sink a willow revetment. High water caused a break in the crown and banquette but emergency repairs kept a major crevasse from forming. A completed break would flood parts of four counties and three towns in the farmlands of the state.
