Fire Tragedy Claims Purucker Family in South Bend

In South Bend Indiana a two story frame home caught fire around 11 pm. Mrs Mary Purucker and five children Aloysius 15 Stephen 10 Louise 12 Katherine 12 perished in their beds. Neighbors saw flames and firemen recovered the sleeping victims after the blaze was controlled. The parents had left earlier with Rita 3 and Mary 19 had stayed behind briefly.

Day In Court Acquits Hostess Of Night Club Nuisance

Helen Morgan actress and entertainer is acquitted by a federal jury of a nuisance charge in a Broadway night club case. After the verdict she said she would quit night clubs forever and showed visible distress as the decision came in. The acquittal follows another government loss in recent nuisance prosecutions.

Geneva reports Lord Cussendtin urged the preparatory commission to address land and air armaments first and defer naval arms. Frustrated Plot to Murder King Boris of Bulgaria

Police in Sofia report they thwarted an assassination attempt on King Boris as he returns to Bulgaria. Two obsolete bombs found in his private railway coach were powerful enough to wreck the carriage. The bombs failed to explode after a warning about communist involvement. The king had arrived in Brussels and was touring European courts amid marriage gossip with Princess Giovanna of Italy.

Attempt to Avert Insult Ends in Aviator’s Death

In Mexico City a Mexican army aviator Lieutenant Joaquin Garcia Bolanos was killed while trying to read and remove posters accusing President Portes Gil and US Ambassador Morrow of attempting to destroy Mexico. Police later found hundreds more posters across walls.

Potter Youth Wins State Speaking Contest at C. C. GL. Convention

Louis Von Wald representing the Potter County Citizens League chapter near Gettysburg won the state speaking contest at the convention in Pierre. He delivered Agriculture and Industry must Bring Together, broadcast by station WNAX from Yankton. Cecil Evans and Dorothy Sparks won second and third. The Southern Cross was recovered from mud near Glenelg after a search spanning many hours. The vessel had been stranded with four aboard including Captain Smith and three others. Local authorities coordinated a widespread search and rescue effort.

Burglar Thanks Radio After Alert From WGN Tip

A burglar looted a Chicago apartment on Prairie Avenue as a woman alerted police. WGN flashed the alert to touring squads, and Lieut Storms led officers to the third floor where the thief had fled. A note inside thanked the radio man for the tip.

Beadle County Opens 4-H Baby Pork Clubs for Boys

Beadle County extends enrollment for 10 to 19 year old boys in baby pork clubs led by County Agent R A Cave. About 70 boys in 440 clubs across 20 eastern South Dakota counties will participate with an expected 2000 club members to buy pigs this spring. Pigs are cross or purebred barrows fed about 100 days then weighed by State College specialists. Top county member earns a silver cup. the first prize pig goes to the South Dakota State Fair and pigs may be sold at Hur on fair. Eligible members may win a free trip to the State College Short Course.

Disappearance case leaves auditor unable to recall events

County Auditor Jesse D. McCoun, missing since April 3 after a Vermilion business trip, was found in Topeka and returned home exhausted and unable to remember details. He recalls an "awful bright light" and a crash but cannot explain when or where it occurred, plans for rest and recovery stated.

Fifteen Miles of Parkways Proposed for Huron

Landscape architect Phelps Wyman outlined a long term park system for Huron with fifteen miles of parkways along the James river Ravine creek and Stony run linking parks and playgrounds. The plan envisions city entrance development on East Third street and a north south boulevard encircling the city with natural parks along the route.
