Ruling Is Asked On Salary Slash In South Dakota
The South Dakota Supreme Court heard arguments on whether a 1933 law cutting salaries for county officers by about 13 percent applies to incumbents when the law took effect. Mrs. Mary Lamb, Codington County register of deeds, had challenged a Codington County circuit court ruling that the law is retroactive to her tenure starting January 2, 1993, with the law becoming effective July 1. The dispute covers county auditors, treasurers, clerks of courts, registers of deeds and school superintendents. J G McFarland argued for Lamb, with Arthur Tasche and State's Attorney BE Evans for the state and county.
