Chicago April 1 Mrs Mary Pickley says she does not object to her husband Thomas’s beer business but fears for his safety. Hoodlums have fired at the Pickley home and her husband has dodged bullets, narrowly escaping death when their residence was struck by machine gun fire.
Washington April 19 Post tester General Farley said four aviation companies seeking to block his cancellation orders could bid on new contracts if they meet requirements Boeing Air Transport National Air Transport Pacific Air Transport and Varney Air Lines asked the District of Columbia supreme court to halt Farley from enforcing the cancelation and to award damages W W Howes testified air mail transport under current arrangements is slower than under private contracts Senate investigators questioned Howes about the cancellation and about a Washington conference of air mail contractors Counts and details on funding and past meetings were reviewed as Howes offered assessments of past actions and the impact on future bids
New York April 19 telegraph reports that AT&T directors overrode a stockholders demand for a public statement of executive salaries. The board asserted the Bell system should remain an institution of opportunity for the best brains and ability in the land. A board drafted resolution noted that if it were possible to attract better men by paying more, it would be wise to do so.
Rengo Japan dispatches report explosives placed on the track wrecked a Japanese troop train near Hengtashotzu east of Harbin Manchukuo killing one soldier.
Jer auld Sanborn Spink Hand and Beadle counties resume road work as 300 men begin projects under National Reemployment Service. A May 1 influx may add 150 workers. Crews include Redfield paving with 120 workers, Beadle and Sanborn county road grading, and oil surfacing on state highway 37 from Huron to Beadle Sanborn line. Convicts performed mule work at the Tucker Prison Farm in Arkansas due to a mule shortage and late planting caused by heavy rains. Superintendent A G Stedman said the convicts trailed the cotton planters in the fields, supplying needed labor.

Senator Dickinson of Iowa charged Secretary Wallace with excluding emergency and other expenditures from Treasury and federal agency reports. He cited $60.8 million in emergency costs and $78.3 million advanced to Farm Credit and others, plus $1.0 billion in admin expenses. He questioned the accuracy of Wallace's financial statement.
The senate claims committee approved a bill granting George Walther of Portland $100 monthly for life. Walther, paralyzed after a 193? shooting by a federal prohibition agent near a location where officers found a still in southwest Washington, had been indicted as a still operator but the case was dismissed. He has remained in hospital.
New York April 1944 The circle of hostile Tammany braves closed in on John F Curry as a majority of the chief council called for his seat. An executive committee meeting was set for tomorrow to act if Curry has not abdicated on a motion to depose him as Tammany chief. Silent Join refused to quit saying he would not quit, repeating that sentiment from prior weeks. Insurgents claimed a majority of extra committees signed a petition demanding Curry's resignation, with votes counted representing 1334 on their side and two more lined up against him. If Curry does not yield the committee could depose him tomorrow.

Joseph B. Eastman, transportation coordinator, told the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee that railroad workers must bargain collectively in labor disputes. He supported a company union as the representative if favored by a majority and opposed forcing a national union to represent a minority.
Congressman Otha D. Werin of Iowa urged the House Agriculture Committee to report favorably his bill regulating the packing industry. In Aberdeen on April 13, Fred A. Schense married Elk Nelson who had served as a a moth Sher and housekeeper since the death of Mrs. Schense in February 1933. The Schense family includes three-year-old quadruplets Jimmy Jay Joan and Jean and older siblings Virgil Frederick and Arlene.

Des Moines April 1. Iowa coal miners who walked out in a wildcat strike over hours and rising wages pledged to return to their picks after 15 local unions in district No. 3 voted unanimously. About 6000 men were involved, with most having already resumed work before yesterday’s action.
