Blaine Dies. Noted Wisconsin Politician and RFC Director

John J. Blaine, 58, former governor and U S senator, dies of pneumonia at his home in Boscobel Wisconsin after a cold while working with RFC officials in Madison. A long time Promressive faction leader he's survived by his widow and daughter Mrs Don Farris of Madison. Funeral services tentatively set for Thursday. Blaine had served as mayor of Boscobel state senator attorney general governor and U S senator. He backed Roosevelt in 1932 and was named to the RFC board in 1933.

Policemen Shot Guarding Train in Eldon Missouri

Two Rock Island railroad policemen were shot and killed early today while guarding a merchandise train. J. W. Whitied died on top of a freight car in Eldon. E. C. Shane was found dead near the tracks at Bland. Deputies chased an automobile linked to the double slaying near Brumley, about 25 miles away.

Grigsby Resigns to Accept Washington Post as Assistant Counsel

Jack Grigsby of Redfield resigns from the state banking department to take a post in Washington as assistant counsel in the litigation division of the National Relief Administration. He plans to return there soon. his successor has not yet been elected.

Gains In Newspaper Circulation And Advertising Point To Upturn

Gains in newspaper circulation and advertising indicate a business upturn across the country. A survey by S Weston shows circulation about 10 percent higher than a year ago, with retail advertising up 27.6 percent in March. City figures show New York 28.0 percent, Chicago 35.0, St. Louis 31.0, Los Angeles 30.4, New Orleans 56.5. Women’s specialty stores report larger gains in those markets. Farm Credit refinancing cuts farmer interest rates in Midwest district

The Farm Credit Administration reports refinancing of farm indebtedness in the St. Paul district covering Wisconsin Minnesota North Dakota and Michigan reduced rates from 5 to 8 percent and even up to 9 or 10 percent to as low as 5 percent. Over half of loans closed since June 1933 through federal land bank loans totaled 61.5 million. The program aims to ease farmer debt while the credit system adjusts.

Trotzky Ordered To Leave France

Paris reports that exiled Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky was ordered to depart France today by the government for promoting a fourth international through his opposition bulletin. Interior Minister Sarraut said Trotsky violated political neutrality and the cabinet withdrew his living permit at Barbizon where authorities had concealed his residence from locals. L A Seger Former Huron Man Is Dead

Wora reports the death of L A Blondy Seger formerly of Huron at Rockwell City Iowa on April 10 after an 18 month illness from cancer. He worked in Huron cafes eight years ago and married Olive Snow of Huron on April 4 1927. Interment was in Rockwell City cemetery with full military honors. survivors include widow a son from a former marriage his parents two brothers and two sisters.

California City Quake Shocker Strikes Santa Ana

A strong earthquake rattled Santa Ana at 10 33 am causing residents to flee homes and offices. No major damage was reported though the Orange County courthouse swayed. The quake was felt in Anaheim and San Juan Capistrano where it was weaker, suggesting a local focal shock near Santa Ana. Peter Keeling and Orville Baker narrowly escaped serious injury when a racer toppled over the outer retaining wall at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during a practice run. It was the first accident at the speedway this year.
