Survey Probable Market For Hogs

A. M. Eberle, director of the State Extension Service, outlines the spring outlook for South Dakota hog producers. He cites a rebound in hog prices expected this summer, driven by reduced slaughter and improving consumer demand, amid large pork stocks and cold storage. Corn shortages in the West Belt complicate growth, with January 1 hog on farms down about 4 percent from 1935, and production unlikely to reach the 1879 83 five year average. Slaughter is expected to remain smaller into 1936 37, contingent on corn prospects and regional supply.

Slaughter Cattle Prices Expected Higher This Year

Brookings April 1 Special Prospects from the South Dakota Extension Service and the Bureau of Agricultural Economics forecast strong beef and veal demand with smaller slaughter figures than last year. Prices for better grades to rise further into late spring. lower grades also rise seasonally until May or June. Cattle on feed in the western states and Texas show reductions from 1936 levels, with feed supplies generally ample and cheaper. The Texas outlook remains favorable for grass-fat cattle and a sizable summer supply from the Southwest.
