Remains of Columbus Exhumation in Havana Cathedral
The exhumation of Columbus remains took place at 10 am in Havana cathedral with General Blavo, Secretary Gavin, the civil Governor, the Bishop, and other officials present. Public access was restricted from 8 am and order maintained by Ordon Publica guards. The remains have lain in an open niche since 1796 after transfer from Santo Domingo, with a 1892 badge marking the relics. Plans for a mausoleum and monument in Havana were never completed, likely awaiting Spain.
