War Department inquiry widens to Pacific and Atlantic regions

A War Department investigation expands to include the Pacific and Philippines theaters. Generals Merriam Otis and Merritt were asked to provide detailed information on quartermaster and medical supplies, provisioning of troops, transport allocations, and rationing during operations in the United States, Manila, and Hawaii. Golfers meet at Mid Ocean Club adopts new constitution

The Mid Ocean Golf Club held a meeting at Dr Howard’s home with about twenty present plus proxies. The constitution was adopted after changes including a 30 day visitor clause. Initiation fees rose to 15 dollars for men and were reduced to 5 dollars for women. Monthly dues set at 1 dollar for men and ball for women. C M Cooke and James A Gilman among names noted. Gilman appointed to seek a lease of Panabow pasture from Oahu College Trustees. Commodore Cantle Terraced Homestead Towering in Honolulu

Fred Harticon completed terracing on the Punchbowl foothill near the powder magazine. Four terraces with a gravel carriage drive lead to the second highest level. V. E. Dave designed and surveyed the project. a 60 foot fall at the rear required careful drainage. Once treed and landscaped the homestead will be a prominent Honolulu landmark, with a tall flagpole featuring a large Hawaiian fog.

Tobacco stock swing hits five operators in one week

Tobaco executive Toble Tamble Jan s Keene amassed 81 600 000 from American Tobacco Company shares in a week. He had joined five big operators pledging not to sell stock to force a merger like monopoly. Keene learned three partners were selling, liquidating his holdings before others reacted as stock fell from 164.75 to 115.50 per share.

The battleship Towa, en route to the Pacific, altered anchorage procedures at Tomkinville after a reported incident. officials say the Navy Department postponed sailing for two battleships to October 6.

Transports Arrivals and Sailings Reported at San Francisco

The Transports section notes the steamer Senator expected to arrive next day at San Francisco. It lists Indianas voyage thirty-two days from Manila, the Ohio thirty days and the Pennsylvania twenty-four days. The Rio de Janeiro carried about 800 sick soldiers from Manila, left Hongkong September 27. The Newport has been twenty days out from Manila and Kobe, September 22. The City of Puchan departed Hongkong via Nagasaki on September 26. The Strait is twenty-seven days out. No report yet on sailing City of Para Morgan City Valencia and Peru.

City of Peking Delayed by Defective Machinery

The Peking left the dock on October 1 but halted in harbor to drop anchor. New cylinders proved too large and followed broke. Cylinders were sent to Union Iron Works for adjustment. Peking resumed weight on October 4 with De. T. Wayson set to return aboard the Alameda.
