Waterspouts Observed Near S F Bound Steamer Coptic
A May 3 sighting off the Farallon Islands as the steamer Coptic, eighty miles west of San Francisco, witnessed two waterspouts forming from dark rain clouds. The larger spiral column brushed the sea while a smaller one appeared nearby, both threatening to deluge the liner if it crossed their path. Passengers watched the rare phenomenon for about half an hour before they vanished.

The Pit and Other Works Review in 1890s Trade Issue
