Legislature Debates Hawaii Land, Bridges, and Waterworks

The Senate read a land regulation bill and debated appropriations for the central fire station and Naunnuea stream bridge. Lyman led on waterworks for Hilo and a 70 foot steel bridge cost discussed, with action postponed. Printing, electric railway charter, and circuit court location also noted.

The Representatives Proceed With Readings and Trials

The House met at 10 a m and a Senate message noted third readings for an appropriation bill and a liquor commission joint resolution. A licensing term extension for Honolulu saloons paused after votes against it. The Senate appropriation bill returned for corrections. A liquor trade commission resolution was referred to public health. At 11 a m the House adjourned. Three of nine Chinese detainees admitted gambling and were fined, others faced trials or acquittals. Mayhem charge against Kahaino reduced to assault and battery with suspended sentence. Panu and Paau to be tried on kidnapping charges on the 18th. Rebollo fined for lewd law. Madeiros found not guilty. Luiz faced counter charges that were dismissed.

Palace Buys Bishop Residence for School Academy

The Board of Education has acquired the Bishop residence on Emma Street, part of Princess Bernice Poundi Bishop estate, to house a new academy with Prof. M. M. Scott as principal from Fort Street School. The primary grades will remain at the retained institution.
