Fourth of July Celebrations in Hilo Feature Big Airs and Races
The town celebrated in up to date fashion with a grand ball at Spreckels hall and a day of athletic and horse racing events. A 21 gun salute greeted sunrise and a crowd of about 8500 watched pony and trotting races, Hawaiian bred horses, and yacht duels with strong showings by Dr Hutchinson and H. C. Austin. The crowd enjoyed music, fireworks, and a lively court-house yard concert, then a leap year dance honoring visiting guests. Captain Marsden of Honolulu arrived, plans for coffee plantation inquiry discussed, and Hood’s Sarsaparilla endorsed for health.

Minsteel Performance Company D or Minstrels plan another performance next Saturday evening July 18 with an entirely new program including new songs dances gags and an after-prove. As this will be their last show for some time a large audience is expected.
Death of Daniel Defoe’s descendant in San Francisco
Daniel Defoe's great great grandson, son of the author of Robin son Crusoe, died a poor sailor in San Francisco at the end of June. Theodore Durrant's case will not be argued in the California Supreme Court for a month. It has been fourteen months since the murders for which he was convicted.

Hospital Trustees Meet at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu
The Board of Trustees of the Queen's Hospital met for the semiannual session. Reports show 76 inpatients at start, 183 admissions, 164 discharges, and 10 deaths for the quarter ending March 1, 1896, with 411 total patients treated since February.

Sheridan charged anew in district court case
In the police court this morning Sheridan now W P Morrow faced a new charge. In the other case the July 3 assault with deadly weapon against Patrick Curtis was amended to July 5. Creighton objected to jeopardy but the court overruled. trial set for the 14th. Not guilty plea entered for Fred Meyer malicious wounding a horse. Eddie Holt assault and battery set for Monday. Saunki fined 5 costs for peddling without license. Popular House room ads.

Hayselden appointed successor. Cane planting prospers with dry flats and rain on the slopes. Over fifty tins of opium found on Lanai beach, likely washed overboard from a passing vessel.
