Waianae extension press trip praised for progress and planning

Honolulu reporters toured the Waianae extension of the Oahu Railroad and Land Company with manager Ahrens and the Waianae plantation staff. The party toured cane fields, pumping stations, a mill, and cocoanut groves, sampled a catered lunch, and adopted a resolution thanking the railroad and plantation management for the memorable excursion.

Trip notes from Waianae excursion and senate reporters

Frank Godfrey sampled water at the plantation twice as an expert. Rev. 8. E. Bishop and H. M. Whitney recalled the trip. The Waimanalo lay off Waianae when the press train arrived but soon departed. The locomotive house at Ewa is being moved to Waianae by flat cars. Fare for the public excursion to Waianae tomorrow is one dollar and a half round trip. Waianae residents, though fond of shade, call the island hot. All senate and house proof-readers were on the trip except Jimmy Keola. Pay will continue as usual, Sam Parker joined at Waianae, staying Makaba overnight. He has recovered from grippe. Manager Dillingham would have doubled the trip if best girl were invited. The only dangerous person was the porter with a razor and a corkscrew in his rear pocket. Lower House session anticipated due to Kamaw oba’s absence. Waianae inhabitants suffered. Regular Ewa trains will run to Waianae from Friday, with round trip fares of 3.00 first class and 2.20 second class. On weekends fares are 1.75 and 1.20. Waianae Company owns 50,000 two-year-old coffee trees at about 1800 feet. Wild coffee has grown nearby for years. new trees come from their seed. Native cube has been used at Makaba for years.
