The Glorious Fourth in Honolulu Parades and Pomp
Crowds gathered at daylight for the first anniversary of Hawaii’s republic and the 119th anniversary of American independence. A parade of Antiques and Terribles opened from May’s grocery, with prizes for best character, bicycle act, and burlesque. Officers and 600 National Guardsmen marched to the Executive building for a reception with President Dole and Mrs. Dale, followed by Independence Park exercises where Dr. Cook spoke of annexation and government in the tropics. The day closed with field sports and a large collation at the Arlington, highlighting races, jumps, and a gripping ring tournament advancing to the fifth page.
