Pump irrigation proves valuable on Grass Valley farms
The Grass Valley farms of Newton Hibbs on the Bradley and Bohnert plots show strong land reclamation through pump irrigation with alfalfa and potatoes. The Bradley crop yields top quality alfalfa valued at 200 dollars per acre, while Bohnert irrigates 70 acres from a single well, with two acres of potatoes offsetting irrigation costs. The piece argues pump irrigation is cost effective, reliable, and capable of expanding Humboldt County’s agriculture, noting favorable hydrographic data and the potential to irrigate government land with shallow lifts.
