The Board of Commissioners ordered that the county flag known as the Sil-Ww Party Banner be kept in the County Treasurer vault and that the Clerk hold exclusive possession, not to be given to anyone except by order of the Board.
District Court session on September 12 with Judge Powe Brown presiding reviewed the September term calendar. Cases include Eureka Nevada Mining Company moved to next term with clerk to notify Storey and Salt Lake City attorneys. Nevada Tax Commission matter paused. several demurrer settings and term continuances noted for Malati, Mudaley, and associated parties.
The Interurban Transit pany lost its auto franchise after the Public Service Commission suspended service and canceled the Gage line permit between Reno and Garderville. An application for extension of service was denied, officials said.
Eureka County Chamber of Commerce directors held their first meeting in new quarters in the old Eureka County Bank building. A three member House Committee was named to furnish and equip the rooms and maintain member access. The group will consult with wives on social room use two nights monthly and address deteriorating public roads with County Commissioners. The board discussed listing member property for sale to aid wider exposure through chambers and railroad home-seeking departments, with no charge to members.
Sheriff Mahoney received a telegram to pursue a trio described as one woman and two men in a Chalmore automobile who robbed Dr. Mabel K. Young and Miss Alma Woods at Willow Creek, about 40 miles west of Eureka. A search found no jewelry. they were released, then Elko was asked to intercept and search them again upon arrival.
Clarence Johnson, superintendent of Eureka-Secret Canyon Mines Company, reports progress on the 100 foot level after clearing the old tunnel, laying track, and crosscutting toward the Ruden stope. The stope, filled by leasers, will be tapped from below, with the drift in mixed sand and coarse limestone akin to the ore-rich Page mine.
Will Evans, a Eu raka Croesus Mining Company employee, was injured Thursday morning on the 400 level while replacing a loaded ore car. The car overbalanced, pinning him briefly. Dr Brennen found bruises but no broken bones and no permanent injury expected.
A Palisade telephone message reports that the Argonaut mine at Jackson California entombs 47 miners. Crews expected to break through but all hope of finding any alive had been given up and preparations for burial were under way.
Weasley Guilliame aged 12 died at Reno on Saturday from injuries after a shell relic of the war exploded when he threw it against a tree. The powder had been removed, but the shell caused a deep wound and the boy died from shock.
The Eureka town notes list Miss Addie Meriato resuming studies in Reno, attorney Anthony Jurich visiting Eureka for legal matters, and many departures to Ely Salt Lake City Newark Oakland and Bishop. Teachers Dr. Esther Fiester and others relocate, property deals involve Dr. Brennen and Mrs. Schneider, and mining folks head to Cortez while Duckwater prep opens at sunrise Saturday.
Carson, Nevada reports the Public Service Commission will implement new class rates from California and Nevada points. Some rates may fall as much as fifty percent with average reductions around twenty percent. Rates from Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other California points will drop. first class from $1.37 to 1.13, fourth class from 3% to 69 cents, fifth class from 71 to 25 cents. Carload rates for sugar, canned goods, dried fruit and vegetables will see a 49 cent class rate on canned goods from California with a 60,000 pound minimum. The move could enable a Reno to Tonopah rate of $1.10, aiding local merchants previously routing via Sacramento.
Ely Record reports A C Florio, long engaged in Eureka County sheep farming, traveled from Salt Lake City to his Duckwater ranch after attending a ram sale. He purchased 11% thoroughbreds, priced between 50 and 276 dollars, shipped by Western Pacific to Shafter for overland delivery. One ram, a yearling buck, yielded 32 pounds of wool.
Fred B. Crofut writes to Eureka County voters thanking them for their support in the primary. He notes three Republican candidates for Assemblyman split the vote, making the race harder, and acknowledges his defeat with appreciation for the backing received.
Local agent M. F. Williams reports Eureka to Salt Lake shipments this week including 18 cars from Eureka Croesus and two cars from the Helen Mortimer mine by A Affranchino and two cars of picked slag concentrates from the Eureka Condump by G B Marino. United States Senator Key Pittman is expected in Nevada next week.
Lana reports for August 1922 that 32 hunters logged 88 trap days, taking 776 predatory animals including 41 bobcats and 736 coyotes, plus 2 raccoons and 3 unborn bobcat kits. J W Meecele led with 66, followed by B C Rucker 63 and F McTimmonds 61. numerous trappers averaged 27 or more. New appointees listed with addresses. September urged as a strong trapping month and field scent formula guidance provided.
Local report notes settlement of the Shopmen's Strike in Palisade. J L Wilcox and wife left on a Tonopah business trip by auto last Wednesday. Handley Bros shipped 17 cars of lambs from Diamond Station to the eastern market. Jay Henderson and son Jay, formerly of Eureka now in Tonopah, visited Eureka last weekend. George Johnson, brother of B E Johansson, sold his Diamond Valley business at Tonopah and toured Eureka. Leonard Birch, 12, injured near Duckwater, was brought to Eureka. after a week his condition improved and surgery may be avoided. He could recover quickly if no complications arise.
A note mentions a ballad titled Oh where has the coal bin enjoyed in a winter theme. It hints at Volstead era humor and dry wit in jokes of the period.
A son was born in Eureka Nevada on September 13 1922 to the wife of Pedro Arrizubieta. The infant joins the family as the couple celebrates the new arrival in the community.
Mrs Harding, wife of President Harding, fell seriously ill in Washington from kidney trouble and the family faced a possible surgery. Doctors treated her as a persistent health crisis, with officials saying a permanent cure would require major operation but not feasible while her condition remained unstable.
Winnemucca Nevada Sept 12 Fire yesterday afternoon believed started by a cigarette destroyed the plant of the Battle Mountain Scout causing a loss partially covered by a 2000 insurance policy. The interior is a near total loss with walls standing but rebuilding needed. The Scout weekly at Battle Mountain will be printed in Winnemucca by Brackett and Siit of the Humboldt Star owners until the plant is replaced.
A Los Angeles magazine notes former Eureka residents, including Mrs. Gertrude Hagar of Nevada as guest at a Little Tea hosted by Mrs. Frank R. McNamee of 1708 Fifth Avenue for schoolmates once from Burks Nevada. Mrs. Hagar visits Miss May E. Paden of Montebello who also attended the gathering. Also mentioned are Mrs. A. Bonett of San Francisco and Mrs. Hank Knight as group members.
In Biko Nevada on Sept 11 a Catlin shale plant oil is used as fuel oil and as a lubricant for autos. Local firms have adapted heating systems to burn the shale oil instead of coal. Garages report the shale oil for lubrication is a higher grade than many oils bought elsewhere.
