South Fork Flour Mill Undergoes Notable Modernization

The South Fork Flour Mill in Elko County is undergoing major remodeling with new shaftings, chutes, elevators, double steel rollers, separators and sifters. Old machinery is discarded as W. Williams and Andrew Francis oversee the work, with the mill expected to resume milling in a couple of weeks. The mill has wheat on hand but needs 200 tons for Fall and Winter trade, aiming to be second to none in Nevada.

Buying Horses For Railway Contracts Across Nevada

The KB and A. L. Stone Company report agents in Ormsby Washoe Lyon and Churchill Counties seeking 800 head of horses and teams plus laborers. Utah Penitentiary Break Overpowers, Two Escape Deaths

Seven inmates seized the Utah State Prison wall on October 9 using sling shots and revolvers. One ringleader Abe Majors was recaptured after a hand to hand with guards. Frank Dayton was killed. Nathan Haworth and James Lynch escaped and remain sought. others were recaptured. Haworth later recaptured near Holiday, Salt Lake County.

Utah Teachers Institute Spelling Contest At Salt Lake

About 150 Utah teachers attended the Salt Lake session last week where a spelling contest Tuesday afternoon weeded out those who failed on a list of 15 words. Henry Pattengill of Michigan urged careful study of difficult words as he demonstrated by asking teachers to spell them. No one spelled every word correctly. Also notes on Dr King’s New Discovery and a political line about the Irish party balancing power in England.

Jail Break at Belmont Delays Sheriff’s Pursuit

Two prisoners Smith Johnson known as Black Texas and James Walsh escaped Belmont county jail Tuesday evening using improvised tools and a soft 18 inch brick wall. They were tracked by deputies McCann Logan and Hollis aided by trail signs and recaptured Wednesday about twenty miles northwest. Johnson took blame for the breakout, while Walsh offered no comment. deputies credited for tracking even without horses. Mrs. Grover Cleveland’s health poor and Langley’s flying machine cited as failures in nearby notes.
