Charles Gilbert, recently arrived in Eureka from Newark Valley, shot himself in a cottonwood grove three miles above the Laxague ranch after a summer of work and mounting financial and emotional strain. An inquest was held by Austin officers and the body interred near the scene. a sister in Ely, Nevada, identified him by a letter found on the deceased.

County Treasurer T. A. Bath sold a line by public auction to Hugh L. Thomas of the White Pine Telephone Company for 33.75.
