A survey discusses rich discoveries in southern Nevada since Tonopah’s strike five years ago. It notes new districts Goldfield Crater Gold Mountain Bullfrog Ray Lone Mountain and Han nampah and predicts more camps may arise along a northwest southeast zone driving prospecting growth. It warns that near Tonopah ground is heavily staked and advises prospectors to seek new regions. It also describes the Great Mineral Zone extending through Nevada into Arizona and Mexico, with Goldfield’s mines facing ore theft and leasers dominating work.

Divorces granted include T L Oddie from Claire Gardner Oddie and Elton Davis from Bertha E Davis and Sarah J Demerse from George Demerse. Contempt found against L B Pratt for failing to appear, fined $20. Indictments filed against M P Booth for assault with intent to kill and R B Schaffer for obtaining money under false pretenses, bond set at $1600 and $2000 respectively. Cavanaugh Euger election contest for County Clerk dismissed on motion. Record registration dispute over Bodie precinct deemed ineligible. objection sustained.
President Roosevelt directs the Department of Commerce to investigate the U S petroleum industry to determine if Standard Oil is an illegal restraint of trade. James R Garfield heads the Bureau of Corporations, aiming for a thorough probe before the end of his term. Also noted are a San Francisco arrest for gold theft via drilled coins and a Goldfield mill project by Los Angeles capitalists planned to begin operations by March.
Letson Balliet, promoter of the White Swan Mining Company of Oregon, pleaded guilty in Federal court to mail fraud after terminating a second trial ordered by higher courts. The once rising mining engineer raised hundreds of thousands in stock subscriptions, with funds allegedly diverted to stock sales and private use, while investors pursued action. Balliet’s first trial ended in conviction two years ago.
M Weinberg a Goldfield merchant died there last week of pneumonia after a brief illness. He was about 56 years old and left a family. The remains were shipped to San Francisco for interment.
