Joseph Coyle, indicted for embezzlement by the White Pine County Grand Jury, escaped from Sheriff Alex Baird at Caliente. Baird chased him toward Conway's ranch after Coyle hired a team to flee, but the suspect vanished near Jim Ryan's lower ranch. Coyle is well known and may blend into the mountains while Ely pursues.

Pistol Duel at Rhyolite Ends Two Lives in Nevada Saloon
A pistol duel in Bevis & Turpin's saloon at Rhyolite Nevada on December 14 left James Clayton and John J. Sullivan dead. Sullivan, a bartender, accused Clayton of short changing him. Clayton fired first then Sullivan shot back killing Clayton. A cook, Max Rosenburg, was wounded but will recover. Clayton had sold mining interests and the two men had harbored enmity for months. Sullivan, 28, from Butte Montana, leaves a wife in Rhyolite. Clayton, 38, leaves a wife in Creede or Colorado Springs.
