Robbery and Death at Fort Halleck

Thomas D. Henry, a Fort Halleck store and saloon keeper, was robbed and beaten by a masked man on December 2. He lingered in a coma and died five days later at about age 60. Humboldt County awarded a $10,794 fire system contract for Lovelock, to be installed within 60 days. Also an advertisement touts Electric Bitters by Mrs. H. M. Schneider & Co. as a remedy sold at 50 cents a bottle.

Woman Dies on Gallows at Windsor Prison

Mrs. Mary Mabel Rogers was hanged at Vermont State Prison Windsor on Friday December 8 after two reprieves and a Supreme Court refusal. She confessed murder of husband Marcus Rogers in Bennington August 13 1902 at age 19 and was executed with accomplices Perham and Estella Bates. Perham received life, Rogers death sentence. the body was claimed by her mother and sister and buried at Hoosie Falls New York. The second item reports stage driver G P Sears of Humboldt Copper Co frozen to death November 25 near Stevens camp after blizzard, aged 60, Calif-born, brother-in-law to E J Wiley.

Eight Hours Miners Workday Supreme Court Decides

The U S Supreme Court dismissed a writ from Nevada challenging the Eight Hour Law, affirming eight hours as a legal workday for underground miners and related operations in Nevada. The ruling ends opponent challenges and signals statutory status. Also reported: embezzlement case in Goldfield with minor dispositions, Reno license-test action by Fishur & Co., Tonopah ore shipments totaling 1697 tons, dry land farming plans in Humboldt County, a severe industrial injury at Goldfield, and a fatal fire at Hazen with substantial losses.

Eugene Ware Suicide Reported Near Goldfield Mountain

A Goldfield dispatch reports the decomposed body of Eugene A. Ware, a noted mining camp sportsman, found two miles south of Goldfield with a .45 revolver beside him and a bullet wound. His death, blamed on gambling losses last summer, ends a pattern of despondency and disappearance with his wife left amid strangers.

Nevada Wheat and Alfalfa Yields and Public Morals Ruling

Nevada University Experiment Station reports wheat yields rising from 35 to 67 bushels per acre. Lovelock rancher harvests 75 bushels per acre on well irrigated land. Southern Pacific booklet estimates alfalfa profit at 15 to 26 dollars per acre. California Supreme Court prohibits punishment for open and notorious cohabitation unless the affair is widely known.

Cattlemen Indicted Over Illegal Fencing in Kansas

Henry B Boice of Kansas City president of the H S Boice Cattle Company and all company officers are indicted for illegally fencing government lands in Morton County Kansas. Four indictments joined as eight counts against company officials. another against A B Lynch and Robert Merton for similar fencing. Also reporting the death of Bartley W Cavanaugh former Comstock figure aged 42 in Sacramento from pneumonia with a history in Virginia and California. Funds for Panama Canal Appropriation Passed

The House voted 11 000 000 for Panama Canal work on December 7 after debates over bond use. A bill amendment required annual progress reports and itemized expenditures to the President and Congress, and the measure passed without opposition. Mrs. Ham McCane of Halleck County died last week. An unrelated ad touts Dr King’s New Life Pills for liver and stomach issues.
