Railways fund for irrigation sparks senate hearing
In Washington on April 4 the House irrigation committee heard George H. Maxwell disclose that the Great Northern Northern Pacific Southern Pacific Santa Fe Union Pacific and Burlington railroads each contribute 6000 yearly to a National Irrigation Association fund plus 2000 from Rock Island, totaling up to 50000 annually. The fund funded an education drive opposing the Desert Land Act repeal viewed to boost land values and scrip holdings. Maxwell said no syndicate of land scrip holders was formed and President Roosevelt’s stance was disputed by both sides. Separately in Salt Lake City the April lead price settled at 3.50 per 100 pounds with contracts expected to continue through May while ore shipments to smelters remain heavy. In Reno Tex Tompkins was fatally stabbed in a Sacramento saloon quarrel as Jack Spears attacked.
