Seven Prisoners Break Jail Attempt Ends With Alarm

Seven inmates at Lane County Jail planned a bold escape by digging through the west wall and dislodging bars. Night officer Grower’s terrier Tiny alerted staff. deputies and Sheriff Fisk halted the attempt. DaBoise led the group, two inmates remained in their cells awaiting trial for murder and abduction, others moved in the inner corridor until the hole was stopped and repairs begun.

Chicago authorities arrest Charles Whitney Norton, accused of widespread fraud involving bonds and securities valued at millions. St Johns November 3 The Roosevelt was damaged by ice on Peary's last dash toward the North Pole. Mrs Peary received a telegram from Commander Peary at Hopedale Labrador saying their voyage is an incessant battle with ice storms and head winds. He reports the propeller damaged and slow progress while awaiting coal from the mail steamer. He remains well and hopes for a wire from Chateau May. The expedition failed to reach the North Pole but penetrated closer than the Duke of Abruzzi's prior attempt.

Position of Catholic Church Is Defined

Pass, Nov. 3. The minister of public instruction and worship announced that the government does not regard the Catholic church as in revolt against the law separating church and state. The church has declined to exercise its privilege and would forfeit 280,000,000 property on December 1, thereafter living under the common law. The cabinet approved the policy and the president signed bills for parliament to release the ethern railroad and abolish the death penalty. Oregon and Willamette Meet on Gridiron
