Balloon ascent ends in basketless drift over Augusta

Dr Julian P Thomas, a New York aeronaut, ascended from the fair grounds in a runaway balloon without a basket or ballast. Entangled in telegraph wires, he cut the basket free and was seen dangling from ropes at 3:30 PM, drifting southeast with fears for his safety.

Cool Teacher Stops Panic In School Fire

Argentine October 31 A cool headed teacher Gertrude Williams prevented a major panic during a schoolhouse fire. Smoke frightened pupils and they rushed doors until Williams, bruised in the crush, kept order as four children calmly formed a line and exited to the street while the fire was small.

Boy Committed to Reform School

The county court ordered a warrant for Francis Tony Tivey aged 11 to be arrested and committed to the reform school after a petition by Sidney J. Tivey. Deputy Sheriff C. C. Hammond arrested him late this afternoon and the commitment followed.

President and wife in Virginia outing at Pine Knot

President and Mrs Roosevelt traveled from Washington to Pine Knot in Albemarle county Virginia for an outing. They will return Sunday evening. The president will work on his forthcoming message and engage in outdoor exercise during the stay.

Freight embargo lifted likely in a week says SP officials

San Francisco reports freight officials of the Southern Pacific say congestion since last May should clear within a week and the embargo on freight shipments will be removed. About 1500 cars still await unloading in yards, compared with 4000 loaded cars a month ago.

Stricken man Jas Foster suffers sudden paralysis

Jas Foster of 247 Lincoln Street was stricken with paralysis last evening affecting the whole right side. Dr L W Brown found him in a serious condition but he is a little better today. Foster and his family recently moved from South Dakota about a month ago.

Y M C A Committees Active in Membership Drive

A committee of RH. A. Hoath P. E. Snodgrass F. L. Chambers and F. W. Osburn worked today among business men seeking a 2500 guarantee for first year maintenance of the Y M C A. The effort yielded a good portion of the sum. A membership committee including Carl Washborne Marion Mae Clain Harry Keeney and Roy Knox also reported success. A ladies committee will visit soon, while Professor P. L. Campbell Roy Potter and S. Roome plan to speak at schools this week. A directors meeting is set for this evening to discuss temporary quarters and exterior cementing on the Matlock block.
