John Vincent Smith 64 a Mohawk precinct resident was found dead in his bed early today after his wife gave him his prescribed medicine during a recent illness. An old soldier he leaves only his wife and many neighbors as pallbearers at the funeral tomorrow at 2 p m from the family home with burial in Baxter Cemetery.
Scripps News notes the Silver Jubilee of Pope Leo XIII marked by a downpour as sixty five thousand pilgrims gather in St. Peter's Cathedral. Cardinals assemble in record numbers for half a century, amid worldwide participation and ceremonial bustle.
The board of regents met in Portland and discussed spending the 25000 special appropriation from the last legislature. A three member committee was formed to inspect the university and guide allocations. They plan to fund engineering and physics equipment, library upgrades, water plant improvements, and campus renovations while preserving property interests. Several professors received salary increases and a year long research leave was granted to Dr Charles Friedel.
