Last evening the Epworth League directed M. E. church services featuring recitations, papers, solos, a duet, and an address by Roy Glass. The program included installation of newly elected officers with Rev. B. F. Rowland presiding as pastor-led ceremony. Officers installed were President Olin Ford and four vice presidents along with secretary Thecla Dove and treasurer W. L. Martin.
A fierce 40 mph wind fueled a major fire in Portland on March 10. By 1 pm a large East Side block was wiped out, thirty families homeless, with losses up to 250000. Firefighters struggle amid the wind as more structures burn and the waterfront remains at risk.
Salem report on March 10 notes a smallpox case at the state prison. Convict E L Stevens, from Baker County, was isolated with his cellmate in the attic of the old hospital. Their cell was fumigated and clothing burned. A previously exposed inmate now oversees them. Quarantine prevented visitor access, and officials said there is no fear of wider spread.
Christ Benson, killer of Jailer Morrell, was captured Saturday night two miles west of Olympia in a deserted cabin. A mob surrounded the jail shouting Hang him but authorities kept the scene peaceful. Benson cried like a child as he recounted his wanderings and past close calls before being returned to his Olympia cell.
A Campbell and Alexander piling camp foreman Edwin C Harbridger suffered a severe leg injury when his axe struck a tree and pierced the bone near the knee, severing the main artery. He was rushed to Cottage Grove where Dr. Anderson and Dr. Heamer treated the wound. he weakened from blood loss but is recovering and expected to be active again in a few days.
J Brand of Bohemia and M Gibson of Smithfield arrived in Albany by overland train yesterday to visit a son at college. In the dark they tangled with the station cars and wandered near the depot. Policeman Cantell located them near the water tank and guided them to the Russ House for safety.
Frank Chevalier, proprietor of the Thurston thirst resort, was indicted for selling spiritous liquors without a county license. The indictment, withheld until warrant service, was served yesterday by Deputy H. L. Bown. Chevalier was brought in last night and placed under bonds of 60 to appear at the June term of court.
Governor Chamberlain has appointed a state board of health under the new law paused by the legislature. The appointees include Dr. W. A. Cusick of Salem, Dr. A. C. Smith of Portland, Dr. C. T. Smith of Pendleton, Dr. L. G. Kinney of Astoria, Dr. E. B. Pickel of Medford, and Dr. Harry Lane of Portland.
Washington March 10. The President sent to the Senate nominations for postmasters in Oregon and Washington. Nominees include William K Curtin Marshfield Marion F. Davis Union Benjamin F Vaughn Heppner Thomas B Randall Oregon City Andreas L Sproul Ontario and John P Irby Kitzville.
City council met with Mayor Chrisman and six trustees. An April six election was ordered and ward judges named. Street work showed 7984 feet of lumber used. Lincoln street widening tabled. Street sprinkling considered by petition. residents along certain streets may request sprinkling funded by abutting property. License transferal from Abrams to Nesmith Owen for Hoffman House. Sewer connection petition allowed. ward boundaries ordinance passed. Saloon tax proposal discussed but likely not to pass. tabled for next meeting.
W H Kay a hardware merchant won the gold medal for the best score at the Eugene Gun Club shoot held Thursday afternoon south of the city. Kay scored 22 of 40 possible blue rocks with competitors Drew Griffin and others trailing. Several Eugene women showed interest in marksmanship and a future handicap event with 16 gauge guns is planned for the April tournament.
Tax payments began at the sheriff’s office opening and continued all day as country residents crowded the city. Five attaches handled demand for prompt payment discounts, creating a busy scene like a crowded bargain counter with mostly men in line.
Fun and tests at the local Oregonian agency gauged news boy candidates. Children shouted for the loudest delivery and the winning boy proved the strongest voice. A playful quiz asked which paper to sell a customer, Guard or Register, with varied opinions.
The post office at Thuston, closed due to the tar route, is ordered reopened within a week. Mrs Chevalier and Win Platt are named in the postmaster plan as before. Town leaders claim the prior closure harmed local business.
J M Tillman of Coburg visited Eugene to seek prosecution of three Coburg youths aged 12 to 17 for forcing his 12 year old son into a freezing McKenzie River swim. The boy later had one leg amputated and faces possible second amputation. Physicians warn the second operation could kill him. official says no law allows prosecuting the boys.
Mrs. J. W. Martin of 47 East Eleventh Street was thrown from a horse early this morning when a laundry wagon frightened the horse. She suffered a broken right arm between the wrist and elbow. Dr Atwood set the bones and she is described as getting along nicely.
Coburg notes a severe heart attack for Hon. T. J. Veaghan residing one mile north of Coburg. Dr Jarvagise attended and by night his condition was described as resting easier. Also reported is Mr. Wilkins injured from a sled fall in which he struck his back on timber and is unable to move about for some time. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Ratio Akager at Junction City on Thursday March 5, 1908.
