Prof Martindale Dies at Weston Normal School President

Professor James M. Martindale, president of Weston Normal School, died Sunday after a long illness. The funeral was held this afternoon. He was 41, yet well known in Eugene. Formerly superintendent of Albany public schools, he leaves a wife and one child. Ed. Gaard.

Fire destroyed the Suburban Railroad car sheds in St Louis with seventy cars burned. loss estimated at a quarter million dollars. In Martinique the St Pierre disaster and Mount Pelee devastation are described, noting Samson Ludger as the sole survivor arriving in New York in distress.

Timber Land Deal Made By Promoter Olston

Otto Olston completed a major land sale, disposing of several hundred acres of timber lands near Walterville to O C Ruby and Jacob Koontz of New Martinsville West Virginia. Ruby is president of the First National Bank. Koontz is a leading local businessman. They plan logging with a large crew and establish camps, possibly moving to Eugene after their visit.

Practicing Early. Six Year Old Ambush of Foot Amputation

A Wendling, Oregon boy aged six began practicing medicine by amputating four toes from his five year old brother with an axe. Dr Fr M Dey, called from Eugene, completed the operation. The boy should not practice further until licensed.

Narrow Escape From Death In Bohemia Mountains

Miner Pearsons, long in the Bohemia district, endured a two day ordeal after getting lost while seeking shelter from deep snow and cold. He survived by building fires from dry timber, melted snow revealing a grand log hearth, and finally reached Werelonse where a kind woman fed him. He traveled to Cot Grove on horseback, calling the experience a life time and wishing for no repeat.

Feeding Beef Cattle on Millican Farm Near Eugene

Robert Millican farms near Walterville sixteen miles from Eugene on the McKenzie. His herd numbers about one hundred and he practices careful crop rotation. He sells eleven head to Watkins & Miller and expects profitable feeding, with roughly twenty dollars profit per head and potential value calculations at the start of feeding season.

Tax Collections Next Week in County

The 1902 assessment rolls have been extended and turned over to Sheriff Fisk for collection with a three percent rebate on taxes paid before March 15. Creed Hammond is appointed deputy to aid in the process over the next three weeks. If half is paid by April 5, balance may be paid by October 5. otherwise a ten percent penalty and twelve percent interest apply.

Filipinos Hold Fast Near Manila in February Skirmish

A force of Filipino insurgents under General San Miguel reappeared yesterday near Manila, avoiding a major clash with the main southern force. They captured three small detachments of constabulary and surrounded the towns of Cainta and Taytay, 11 miles east of Manila, seizing 40 scouts and 10 constabulary men who were later released.

Dr W F Mendenhall Died in Harrisburg at 75

Dr W F Mendenhall prominent Lina county physician and Eugene figure died at his Harrisburg home Saturday night February 71. Funeral was held today with attendance from Eugene residents. He was in his mid seventies.
