Thomas Brasel killed by fall from train

Thomas W. Brasel special agent for Pacific States Telephone Co. based in Eugene was killed by a fall from a Southern Pacific train near Halsey Linn county. His body found by railroad workers and identified through clothing letters. Coroner from Albany notified and Brasel's body to Albany for disposal directions. He was about age with wife and young son, parents and several sisters in Portland. He had worked for the company for years and made friends in Eugene during his temporary residence.

Springfield Wins From the Maroons in Portland Game

The Springfield baseball team defeated the Brainard Maroons of Portland 18 to 8 on the Springfield grounds Sunday afternoon. Joe Valifero hit a home run driving in three runs, aided by Charles Valifero’s pitching. A purse of 100 attracted bets as Springfield, claiming the state amateur title, faces more Portland teams to lock undisputed supremacy. The score by innings showed a decisive Springfield win.

Probably new sawmill on Lower Siuslaw area eyed

The schooner Hugh Hogan arrived from San Francisco to load at Acme for Siuslaw Lumber Co. mills. The Mayflower was towed down river from Acme, loaded with Siuslaw lumber and butter for Hurd creamery, preparing for San Francisco. James McCarty of Detroit and L Carr of Recenada, Mich., arrived Saturday to survey land for a potential mill site, then left Monday via Lake Creek to inspect timber nearby.

Saloon keeper assaults anti-saloon sleuth in Cottage Grove

Report from Cottage Grove says Oscar Parsons, former saloon keeper, assaulted George Belin, an anti-saloon detective, on a Saturday night. Belin was knocked down and beaten. Parsons fled town to avoid arrest. Belin had previously gathered evidence in related Florence liquor cases. Hughes was fined for illegal sales.
