An invitation from Mayor G R Chrisman and Eugene officials invites President Roosevelt to visit Eugene Oregon during his spring coast tour. The telegram requests prompt White House attention and notes the invitation was sent yesterday afternoon from Oregon.
The Marelefield Coast Mail publishes a profitable illustrated bomber guide describing the famed Coos Bay coast. The community has stirred in recent months as the Great Central Railway completes its Pacific coast terminal, with the Mail praised for staying at the front rank.
San Francisco reports Winnie B Marcer, the All American pitcher, committed suicide at the Occidental Hotel by gas inhalation. George Gould’s residence fire causes $30,000 in paint and $50,000 in hangings loss. Spain proposes a half‑million dollar display at St Louis Exposition. In Salem on January 13 Senator Milt Miller of Linn county introduced a flat salary plan for state officers. Lane county’s E R Mummey was honored with a clerkship, the delegation assigning the post as at the 1901 session. The Senate opened with rapid action, twenty four bills and several resolutions referred to committees.
The white dove of peace visits Oregon and Washington. The long running disputes over track athletics are fading as both states announce a football game for next season to be played in Seattle in November. Authorities hope to replace the fierce rivalry with sport and camaraderie across the Pacific Northwest.
Mrs Susan B Moore dies at 71 after long frailty at her son James Moore’s home near the riverbridge. Pioneer of the state, she crossed plains with her husband in 1858. Survived by six sons and one daughter including Oren LaFayette Steve Henry Lon Moore and Ed Poole of Portland. Funeral tomorrow at 9 from the residence with Rev Bowsiom officiating. interment in Present Mid cemetery.
The town of Walker plans notable winter improvements including a larger Walker Brown store expanding to hold a broader stock of general goods. The shingle mill will soon be back in operation, with the three gentlemen involved securing work and readiness.
City council notes include 178 fire department members in five companies and 8 serious fires last year. A major agenda item transfers the contract to a new Eugene Springfield Electric Light and Power Company with Booth Kelly backing power expansion from Springfield. Tax levy set at 8.64 mills with specified allocations.
The body of Representative Thomas H Teague left Washington on a special car and will arrive in Portland Saturday. He is accompanied by Mr Tongue's family with a committee from each house of Congress including Representative Woody of Oregon. The funeral will be held on Sunday at Ellisboro, arranged by Mr Teague. Revelations of regret were voiced by both houses and they adjourned in respect to his memory.
Tuesday an intimate gathering at Miss Grace Elizabeth Farrington's home celebrated her sixth birthday. The party featured refreshments and games, lasting from five to seven.
H Morris returned from attending the funeral of his mother Mrs E M Morris who died Friday at her daughter Mrs WM Davidson's home near Rowland. The funeral was conducted by Rev Wiltee at O'sicok Sunday with interment in Odd Fellows cemetery at Muddy Station. Bearers included the venerable lady's pallbearers.
A son was born on July 6th 1893 to Mr and Mrs Morgso in Springfield. The announcement notes the family welcomes a male child and records the precise birth context for local readership.
Honorable Thomes H Tongue, born in England in 1844, died at 12 50 PM after heart disease induced by acute indigestion. An Oregon congressman and longtime Republican leader, he served in the state senate and U S Congress, leaving seven children with wife Miss Singleton. Funeral planned near Hillsboro, Oregon, with eulogies in Congress.
Daily guard reports city council notices detailing Electric Light Enterprise plans to absorb the current plant and add a large transmission facility at Springfield to supply Eugene, Fairmount, and Springfield for years. The company partners with Booth-Kelly for fuel and will operate two distributing stations while retaining existing holders.
Portland Telegram reports the sudden death of Mr Tongue, a prominent Oregon politician with a lengthy service in the National House of Representatives. Senator Booth praises his energy and worth, noting he never among Oregon’s representatives has been excelled.
The First National Bank directors met this morning and found the bank in strong condition. All existing officers were reelected: TG Hoodricka president, B Eakin vice president, P K Snodgrass cashier, L A Potter assistant cashier, with F L Chambers GK Obrieman T G Mendricks B Eakin and P E Snodgrass as directors. The Willamette valley’s Albany area earns praise from the Democrat and Eugene papers for business and education.
