Coburg notes Aug 22 report H F Backman proclaims the town has its first standard sidewalk as rains approach. mumps cases mild, mill workers on vacation, painters near completion at Sackett's store. Joe Lusby and wife, with Chas Lockard and family, depart for Newport for a week. Night shift workers take vacations, clock ill, Elmer acting in place. Pfeifer travels to Portland. Midnight Blaze Destroys Smithing Shop on Ferry Street

A small blacksmith and carriage shop owned by Allen L Smither on Ferry street near the river bridge was completely destroyed by fire between 11 30 and midnight last night. The contents burned as well. The owner estimates the loss at 000 with no insurance.

Chick Sues Ex Register Bridges Over Timber Land Deal

Chas H Chick and associates Constantine Morton and Everette Lewis sue J S Bridges former U S land office official in Lane County Circuit Court for failure to convey 72 acres of timber land on the McKenzie river. They allege an August 14 1906 contract at 20 per acre totaling 14400 and deposit with First National Bank of Eugene, seeking decree for specific performance and delivery of land, abstract of title and a warranty deed. Several other contracts near the Bridges tract are said to be repudiated with more suits to follow.

Boy Arrested For Horse Stealing Near Oregon City

Karl Chapman about 18 was arrested Sunday evening by Sheriff Fred Fisk in Eugene charged with larceny of a horse and saddle from Ward at Clackamas near Oregon City. Ward sent him to Arleta with the horse to transact business, another man claiming the saddle took it, Chapman returned to Ward and was told to recover the saddle or face arrest. He fled to The Dalles, later returning to Eugene two weeks ago to stay with his mother Mrs H E Chapman. The youth appears honest and tells a straightforward tale.

New Machinery for Eugene Steam Laundry

A new S horsepower boiler arrived today from Portland for the Eugene steam laundry and will be moved to the new brick building at West Eighth and Charnelton streets. A 23 horsepower engine for the laundry recently arrived and a large amount of new laundry machinery is on hand. The building is rapidly nearing completion.

Mrs. Lucy Mackey died at Pleasant Hill on the morning of the burial day at 6 o clock. She passed away at her son Bert Mackey s home. Born in Virginia, she lived in the area for many years.

Log Cabin Hotel Burned to the Ground at McKenzie Bridge

Fire swept the Log Cabin hotel owned by George Frissell at McKenzie Bridge on Saturday forenoon around 10 o clock. Only Mr and Mrs Frissell and the fire chief were present as guests were away fishing. A sewing machine and a bed were the only items saved while guests’ effects were lost. Local details arrived by telephone from Seaburg and Leaborg as authorities awaited fuller particulars.

Fire destroys popular McKenzie hotel

Harris, Patterson, Kays, Green, and Mrs Croner with son Charleo and Berkeley residents sent clothing to Eugene relatives after a stove chimney spark ignited the roof. Strong wind fueled a rapid blaze, consuming the hotel built a decade ago by Mr Frissell who ran it. Estimated loss about 2500 dollars with 600 dollars insured. rebuild plans undetermined.

Farm Residence Destroyed by Fire at Walker Station

A farm residence at Walker Station occupied by L H Gilchrist and owned by Geo O Walker burned to the ground on Saturday evening about five o'clock. Fire traced to a defective flue. Camp Tacoma Murray August 21 The Oregon troupe leaves camp Wednesday morning and returns the same evening paying two extra days plus four cents coffee money. Eleven brigades join the First Separate Battalion in a large review at American Lake with infantry artillery and a mountain battery on mule backs. Mother and Child Died at Creswell Funeral

A sorrowful Creswell funeral on August 20 marked the passing of Mrs. John Beak and her newborn infant. The service, held in the hall, drew many mourners as the bereaved man and his English mother received support.
