Veterans Parade in Minneapolis Ends in Tragedy

The fortieth G A R parade marched through Minneapolis with Ex Governor Vendant as grand marshal and Adjutant General Wood as chief of staff. Commander in Chief Tunner was escorted by Minnesota National Guard regimental staff and Chicago’s Columbia post. Thomas H Martin of Washington DC, senior vice commander, collapsed and died during the march, one of three deaths at the encampment, with others including J H Burke and a former First New York Dragoon member George Smith.

Two Accidents in Southern Lane Injure Teens and Workers

Harvey Lajoie, 16, near Walker, was accidentally shot in the right leg after cocking a pistol to shoot a squirrel. Doctors removed the bullet from behind the knee. the wound is not dangerous. In Corena, Dra. Kime and Hackett treated Pred Jones, a logger for Chambers Lumber, whose ax severed the big toe and two adjacent toes while he cut a maple. He was taken to Dorena, then to town for surgery. a large artery was severed.

Work Progressing At Waldo Lake

A. K. Black and son have spent the summer at Waldo Lake with Civil Engineer Simon Klovdahl on preliminary work for a major upper Willamette irrigation project. They report a new trail from the Military road to the lake, housing for workers, fresh water soundings, and substantial data collection.

Cruel Whipping of Woman by Grace Troopers Reported

In St Petersburg Mile Smirnoff and companions observed crack chevailier guards as they rode by. The commander ordered a wheel and the woman was beaten at the barracks then paraded before officers. Clothing torn and welts formed, doctors uncertain of internal injuries. Public fury grows as troops are praised by the czar.

Military Road Grant Sold to Syndicate in Oregon

The Oregonian reports the sale of most of the old Oregon Central Military Road land to a syndicate led by the Hunter Land Company of Minneapolis and Richard Sykes of Santa Barbara. The tract runs from the Cascade range forest reserve to the Idaho line, minus the Klamath reservation. Associates include W. E. Trimble Co of James town and A. E. Johnson, with California Oregon Land Co ownership misstatement corrected to Oregon Land and Livestock Co.

Barnard Found Guilty by Jury

In Portland Oregon on August 12 a federal jury found Doe D. Barnard guilty of perjury for swearing Charles A. Watson met homestead law requirements. The jury, composed of Portland businessmen, recommended mercy. A night session was held and juror Walter H. McMonies, ill with fever, heard the closing from a sofa. The deliberations occurred in the courtroom to avoid moving the ill juror.

Runaway team creates excitement near Ninth and Willamette

A runaway three horse wagon frightened on East Ninth Street sauntered into downtown at noon. The team toppled near Henderson Wells shoe store with one horse badly injured and later taken to Cooper's stable. Owner Swanson, a farmer west of the city, may face losses as the animal is deemed internally injured.

Oregon Hop Crop Expected Light This Year

Oregon expects a lighter hop output as poor cultivation and weather affect yields. Last year’s crop was about 112000 bales, with estimates for this year between 100000 and 120000 bales despite a 10 percent rise in planted area.
