Washington August 4 President Roosevelt today forwarded a message of condolence to the president of Obiil expressing sympathy over a recent tragedy. The brief note follows a day of high level diplomacy as officials in the capital send condolences to allied heads of state.

Five bonded dead in Valparaiso earthquake disaster

Santiago August 2 Five bonded persons are dead in Valparaiso after a powerful earthquake. Losses run into the millions as six or eight other cities are reported destroyed. Railroads street railways telegraph and telephone systems are demolished. Madame Mont wife of Admiral Mont is alive but seriously injured. Restoration of street railway and lighting is expected today.

A heavy quake struck Valparaiso last night with a slight tremor felt in Lima this morning. Reports note Hua Chow also experienced shaking yesterday, underscoring regional seismic activity.

San Francisco Relief Committee Raises Donations

The committee of 40 appointed by Mayor Schmitz met to arrange relief for the fire victims. Within fifteen minutes each member pledged subscriptions totaling 82005, and the Canadian Bank of Commerce telegraphed to the Chilean president requesting an advance of 10000 at the committee’s request.

Two Barns Burned at Trent After Fire Sparks

Henry Godard's barns at Trent were burned yesterday evening around five. A three year old boy playing near one barn dropped a lit match on loose hay, starting a blaze that consumed both barns, 25 tons of hay, 450 bushels of oats, and field hay. The wind spread the fire, requiring many men to extinguish it.

Railroad Work at Klamath Falls Starts Dredging

Klamath Falls Oregon August 17 Work on the California Northeastern Railroad grade began today with the Adams dredge moved to a site about a mile south of town. A three foot wide channel is being dredged east toward the survey line, about a quarter mile away. Once the dredge reaches the survey the grade will cross the marsh toward the depot grounds near Hot Springs Addition and Foreman Meyers will push the operation vigorously.
