A mob of about one hundred men searches Brush Island for a group of black men accused of kidnapping a twelve year old white girl from Fort Gibson four weeks earlier. A firefight killed one posse member. The girl escaped and described brutal torture and captivity by twelve men, with the mob planning to force the captors to surrender.

Injured logger treated after tree limb strike

Encampment Site Chosen Across River From Roseburg
Col Geo Yoran Capt J M Williams and Col O Yoran returned from Roseburg after selecting the Byars place as the battalion encampment site for early September. The area is within city limits but small for extended drills, so a larger field along the railroad will host extended order practice. Water will be supplied by tapping the pipeline to the Soldiers Home.

David Cherry Dies After Illness in Portland
David Cherry died in Portland after a brief illness. Born November 10 18 in Giortrea Ireland he was 66 years 9 months and 18 days old. He immigrated to Canada in 1848 and moved to Oregon in 1870s, settling in Eugene and becoming a pioneer furniture maker. He married Annie M Atkins of Ontario and had two sons Harry D. Cherry of Eugene and Robert W. A. Cherry of Salem. Survived by four sisters and two brothers, with funeral at his residence at 10 am conducted by Rev I D Driver and burial in the IOOF cemetery. Ringling Brothers circus will tour Oregon next week with shows in Portland Salem Albany Eugene Medford.
