Last Friday about 10 oclock a rear fire at J R Bowers barber shop near the bathroom store endangered the block from Parkison store to Hopka Dunbar saloon. Encampment fire department fought headway with no wind and doused the blaze but water damage hit the barber shop and restaurant.
Colorado Wyoming and South Dakota forests show 1148 748 and 167 miles of telephone lines and roads plus 2958 miles of trails. Colorado hosts 11 of 54 14 000 foot peaks with 44 350 000 board feet annual timber cut. Over six years 5219 timber sales, 96 percent under 500 dollars. Roads and trails costs listed for each state.
The Encampment youths formed a Christian Endeavor society two weeks ago and elected officers: President Miss Lella Hunter, Vice President Mrs Lillian Little, Secretary Miss Delia Hilliard, Treasurer Miss Edith Little. Hilliard led the meeting and talks were given. Mrs Haines will lead next Sunday at 6 30. Mrs Vane visited from the ranch on Monday on business.
The first part of the week Mr Haupt was sick delaying work. Long services were held nightly and questions answered via a question box near the door. Write questions with bible verses and drop in the box for anonymous courteous answers. No collections except Sunday. contributions optional. Rev Mr Marquis preached on Christ the Fountain of Life at union service. Plan to have both pastors work together for church growth.
Prospectors encounter a large cinnamon bear at the Willow creek camp when unarmed. Noah Fingerlee killed a 400 pound cinnamon bear on the creek bank and skins the hide. Grand Encampment baseball elected officers S R Willis manager and Chas Clemmons captain as games loom with Saratoga and Rawlins. A reception at Allen's hall was a success.
The G F S A was entertained by Mrs Keith Kimsey at her Encampment home on Wednesday evening October 27 from 8 to 1130. The gathering featured music singing and a supper served in courses. Attending were Mesdames Suttles Ashley Evans Leake Ferry Austin Woods R H Kimsey and Lella Hunter Margaret Canfield Dolly Hopka Alma Wombaker Delia Hilliard Myrtle Dunbar Mary Arendell Francis Heaton Marion Crout and Messrs C H Ashley R H Kimsey and Keith Kimsey. Mrs Charles Hansen of Pass Creek is visiting Encampment this week with Mr and Mrs G C Austin.
Mr and Mrs Harry G Evans arrived from Denver on Thursday of last week to visit Mrs Evans parents Mr and Mrs W F Hopka. They departed on Tuesday of this week for their new home at Rawlins.
Grand Encampment gains a daily stage schedule with the Scribner line. The Orville stage runs Saratoga to Grand Encampment and back, delivering mail between the two towns. Additional notes include local social events, church activities, and residents’ visits to nearby communities.
It Scofield, a longtime Encampment resident from Medicine Row, visited last week and greeted many old friends and acquaintances while in town.
Mesdames G C Austin Charles Hansen and George Kuntaman traveled to Baratoga Puesday in Mrs Hansen s car DF Crout W G Wilcox By Rhoades and James KR. Little went to in creek last Sronday returning with enough fish for the group a couple days. Some of the nicest trout were caught. The trip was made in the trout ear.
The Royal Neighbors held a Hallowe'en dance and supper at City Hall last Friday night. The Lenke orchestra provided music and the dance continued past 2 AM. A midnight lunch of sandwiches pickles coffee cake and ice cream was served and enjoyed by attendees of all ages.
Garoutte, a south town rancher with 20 acres, called at the Record office and left $2.00. He grows many crops and despite a freeze in July, he yielded over 150 bushels per acre. He has extra potatoes from this year since the Carbon Timber company, his former buyer, is out of business.
Mrs W F Hopka hosted an At Home for her daughter Mrs Harry Graves Evans formerly Miss Ruth Hopka guest with her parents last Monday afternoon. Guests included Mesdames Evans Tennant Glackhall McKay Parkison Rankin Carver Kuntaman Kimsey Ferry Wilcox Little Grandma Tennant Hopka Suttles Metcalf Wirth and Miss Alma Wom baker Lella Hunter Gertrude Berquist Margaret Canfield Mary A Bolan. A three course luncheon followed a games session and good wishes for the bride-to-be were exchanged.
The state game department will hire wolf and coyote hunters to set up camps in the hills this season. They will serve as assistant wardens for fifteen days each month and receive pay. Additional earnings come from bounties and the state. they may retain pelts.
City hall meeting set for Monday to decide on keeping a high school program alive. If concrete actions are not taken immediately, Encampment may lose the high school for another year.
