Forty five Emmons county men from Class One are slated to leave around March 29 for military duty. The list includes residents of Linton, Strasburg, Hazelton, Braddock, and other towns, with several from Minnesota and Iowa. A community send off is urged the night before departure.
Americans gain daylight for warmer months as clocks move ahead to 2 a.m. on a Sunday in March and revert in October. The gleaming Red Cross bureau aids mutiles with new limbs while veterans endure quiet, grim fellowship in the Paris headquarters as they adjust to loss and recovery.
A 1918 letter from Williams County North Carolina Red Cross outlines a program inviting farmers to donate the proceeds of one acre of their crop after seed and threshing costs. A local committee will oversee pledges, signs, and countywide interviews to build Red Cross funds with minimal farmer burden.
Lutheran ministers from about one third of Minnesota counties met March 4 in Minneapolis to discuss loyalty to the Government. Forty three ministers attended, chaired by A R Rogers, and unanimously resolved to aid the Third Liberty Loan by preaching loyalty and obedience to the Government in all lawful matters.
The Record features two Thrift Stamp ads this week. A large advert donated by court house officials, and a smaller one paid by The German American Bank promote the Government thrift sale. merchants funded a prior page ad and the community backs the movement to boost sales.
Women of Emmons County organize under Mrs. Scott Cameron to push bonds in the upcoming Third Liberty Loan. County vice chairmen are named across towns from Linton to Burr Oak, with state and federal leaders summoned to a Bismarck conference for guidance and momentum.
Clarence White, held on a murder in the first degree charge, received a preliminary hearing at the county courthouse. He admitted shooting C. D. Sloan, was well examined, and will remain in Burleigh county jail until the October term. Judge Burk will defend the prisoner. A large crowd attended the brief proceedings.
A Tuesday gathering at the court house aimed to organize Thrift Clubs but drew few women due to lack of notice. Attorney Kelsch urged broader participation and patriotic support for Thrift Stamps, stressing family duty and wartime sacrifices, and praising younger volunteers.
In Pensacola Florida on March 11 1918 Lance Corporal Lester G Schlangen writes to his parents and siblings about finishing school tests earning a second class rating raising pay to 55.50 monthly and possible first class rating. He details training on aeroplane engines of 725 pounds eight cylinders two spark plugs and two magnetoes, guard duties at the Navy Yard and a war insurance policy costing seven dollars monthly. He also notes a transfer to Company D and mentions sweets from family and letters from home.
Packages containing dutable gifts sent to members of the Expeditionary Forces serving in England will be delivered free of duty. The gifts must be bona fide and within the recipient’s personal requirements and addressed to the regimental address of the recipient.
