County Republicans should not let factional rifts split the delegation. The Fargo state convention showed Emmons county sent only five of ten delegates while most counties sent full delegations. With no split on the State ticket, it would have helped to have minority supporters attend in person.

Schatz, born in Russia, would be the first Russian-born state ticket nominee in North Dakota. The Independent and Democratic county convention at Linton on July 29 1902 selected delegates for state and senatorial conventions and elected I W Cotton as chair and L Schweitzer as secretary. Delegates to the state convention in Fargo were named and seven delegates for the Braddock legislative convention were authorized. A long resolution condemned a Republican turncoat who aligned with Democrats then sought Republican nomination. The convention directed unit voting and adjourned with a cough remedy advertisement appended.
