Hotel Porter Murdered in Lorain by an Italian
Bert James a colored porter at the Franklin Hotel in Lorain was shot and killed after an altercation over a bottle of whisky with Joseph Tourney, saloon keeper at 420 Broadway. The shooting occurred in the alley behind the hotel as Tourney fled west toward Chestnut street. Witnesses include R F Powell hotel proprietor, Nolan the hotel porter, Anderson a hotel guest, and Julia Joker. Tourney, who fled, was later arrested by Huron police after dispatches went out to nearby towns. Dr Williamson pronounced James dead en route to hospital. coroner ordered autopsy.
