Old Will Contention Over Berks County Lands

The 1804 Jacob Fuchs will faces court challenge in Pennsylvania over widow’s rights and coal land titles worth millions, with the widow waiving claims on remarriage. A later widow’s allowance from seventy years ago lists modest household provisions and brandy, gin, and wine. A new law firm, Van Deusen and Calhoon, will open in Elyria in the Century block to serve Lorain county.

Fire breaks through stove floor at old high school

A light blaze tore through the bottom of a stove in the remaining wing of the old high school on Thursday night. A three foot diameter hole burned in the floor, total damage about five dollars. Firemen arrived promptly and put out the fire with no difficulty.

Interesting Football Game Ends In Overtime Tie

A Wednesday football match at the fair ground between FBS and EA C ended 0-0 after two 20 minute halves. Overtime of 10 minutes gave EAC a slight edge as they dominated territory. KrAC faces North Amherst next Sunday Oct 26 in red and blue colors, with a large crowd expected on the 1:40 car.

Court records show Court of Common Pleas Judge Finley considering decree to foreclose a mortgage on land in Hrighton township. Arvilla Harris pledged property to secure a promissory note for 323 dollars and 80 cents dated October 27 1891, with the plaintiff the note holder.

Lorain Steel Plant to Shut Down Briefly

The Lorain steel plant will suspend all operating departments by next week due to weak orders. About 3,000 workers will be laid off for up to six weeks while repairs and tube mill completion prepare for a busy restart. Officials say Lorain can produce tubes and steel cheaper than anywhere, so the plant will not permanently close.

Three weddings occurred in Wellington on Wednesday night. Katherine Gott daughter of Mr and Mrs D A Gott married Cleveland native R B Buswell who will reside in Cleveland. Cora Auble of Spencer wed Leon R Adama, to reside in Wellington. Dora Naugle married Frederick Bounette, with plans to reside in Wellington.

Probate Court appoints administrator in Phipps estate

Probate Court Alfred T Phipps has been appointed administrator of the estate of Jamie L Phipps of Elyria with a $4,000 bond. The will of Frederick Messal of Amherst is admitted to probate leaving all property to his wife on the condition she does not remarry. if she marries the property is to be divided equally among their five children.

Divorces Granted in Two Cases Amid Custody Rulings

Fred Roberts was granted divorce from Laura Roberta on grounds of gross neglect of duty and wilful absence. Judge Webber awarded custody of the two eldest children to Roberts and the youngest to Roberta. Mary Bojtor was granted a divorce from Andrew Bojtor on grounds of gross neglect of duty and habitual drunkenness, with alimony set at $50 per month for Mrs Bojtor.

A steamer heater under the opera house now uses natural gas instead of hard coal and is proving very satisfactory for heating needs.

Brave old Jarvis Meach pictured amid county tragedy recalls heroism

John Mead, brother of the late Jarvis Meach, distributed photographs taken days before Jarvis died from injuries after burglars attacked his home. The pictures show Jarvis with his gun Old Bunty and the newer weapon gifted by friends. Mead recalls the night of the attack and Jarvis’s bravery.
