A terse note from VER BLOCK AN'S BARGAINS announces limited quantities and urges customers to act quickly. The message hints at a location piece but provides few specifics about items or exact whereabouts.
Early Saturday the mangled bodies of four unknown Polish laborers were found along Lake Shore tracks east of the city. No identities could be determined, with injuries too severe to describe. a scrap of paper and $66.25 were recovered. Coroner ruled death an accident as a freight and a fast express passed after the men were struck. The victims, likely railroad workers, were to be buried immediately.
Three of the Barzens brothers, Polish men, have been identified among those killed in Friday night's wreck on the East side. They had worked for the Lake Shore before traveling to the old country six months ago to visit relatives and returned four weeks ago. The youngest in the group remains unidentified.
Next week, likely Tuesday May 10, the O and S W runs half hour cars between Oberlin and Cleveland. Westbound from Elyria, trains will turn at Oberlin and return to Cleveland. Service will cover Elyria to Oberlin and Elyria to Cleveland, and the so called limited will be discontinued.
Judge Webber set a local record by granting five divorces in a single Friday session of the court of common pleas and opening a sixth case. Divorces went to Cauffman, Spitzer, Crane, Brown, and Stacy, with alimony of two thousand dollars to Mrs Stacy. Also notes milk dealers planning a plant to sterilize raw milk for Elyria distribution.
The Northern Oratorical League contest at Ann Arbor featured seven western universities with George Jones of Minnesota winning for his speech The American City. Aubrey toodenough of Oberlin placed fifth with The Mission of the Anglo Sazen as the judges noted. Remember Champney isa ill in the low cream business. Mayor Folger fined Angusz Quashnef ski ten dollars and costs for non support with a child in an orphan's home. he owed two dollars weekly and was arrested. William Goldsmith fined for sleeping three nights in a shed on city air ground against ordinance. Water meters contracts awarded to Hersay Meter Company of Boston for Torrent large meters from two to six inches costing about $1,100. small meters to be supplied by Hersay and Neptime of Boston at about $600.
William Webster of La Porte was nearly mobbed last week for allegedly beating his wife. He returned from exile on Wednesday and is living at his home. He said he has been with La Grange friends. The humane society had prepared a warrant for his arrest, but Mrs. Webster travelled to Elyria to appeal to Mayor Folger to hold off. She pleaded, Give him one more chance, and the mayor agreed.

General G. W. Shurtleff, a prominent Grand Army man, died at his Oberlin home Friday night after an operation in Baltimore six weeks earlier. He was 73, served as captain in the Seventh Ohio Infantry at the Civil War's start and earned the rank of brigadier general. For 33 years he remained active with Oberlin College, serving as a trustee. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. S. H. Price of Glen Cove Long Island, and Miss Shurtleff of Oberlin.
The Elyria Milling Co. prepares stone for a new dam at the old Arnold mill by the bridge. The existing dam will be torn down and replaced with a substantial structure built for the future. The old mills are to be overhauled and improved.
Probate Court O E Daniele appointed administrator of Jennie E Heidy late of Lorin with a 4000 bond. Funeral for Lorien Smith seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Harry Smith of Northrop Street held at 2 pm Sunday after four weeks of brain fever illness. Lorien was described as bright and lovable and the community mourns.
The Lorain County Union 8 convention held in Grafton Friday proved a success with a large attendance. Officers elected for the coming year include President Rev. H. S. Wannamaker Elyria, 1st vice president W. A. Donaldson Lorain, 2nd vice president Mrs. F. N. Smith Elyria, 3rd vice president Rev. D. Arnitz Grafton, Treasurer C. C. Maple Fields, Secretary Mrs. Paul Sutliffe Ooonville, Supt Normal Marion Metcalf, Supt Primary Mrs. E. M. Pierce Lorain, Supt Home Mrs. J. W. Bradshaw.
The Bridgs Street Mach ing Company plant was closed by the sheriff on Friday afternoon. G H Arnold holds a cattle mortgage on the property with no payments made.
Hiram Sears famed agent of Sailor and Boatmen's work lectures in Elyria churches this Sunday from five to seven minutes under an evangelical appeal. No collections, but private contributions to his humane cause next week. Misses Mac Long and Anna Thro of National Sunshine report successful fund donations and plan to move to Mansfield after completing Ohio organizing tour.
