How Nutmegs Grow

Nutmegs grow on small pearlike trees up to twenty feet high with fragrant lily of the valley like flowers. The seed inside the red fruit yields nutmeg and mace, the fruit about the size of a peach. Trees thrive in Asia and tropical America, bearing fruit year round, with Jamaica trees producing thousands yearly. The Dutch once controlled Banda trade and burned nutmegs to keep prices high, but the nutmeg pigeon helped scatter the nuts, restoring supply and broadening worldwide use.
