Local notices tease bargain pricing with limited items on display. A terse ad highlights price points and location specifics, urging shoppers to compare value. Deals promise savings though only a few py items remain, prompting quick visits.
County clerk Wilcox completed the Lorain County divorce statistics for the year ending July 1 1904. Pending on July 1 1903 were 15 suits, 4 cruelty and 3 habitual drunkenness, and 124 new suits were filed in 1904 with 0 adultery, 54 absence and neglect, 11 cruelty, 4 habitual drunkenness. Wives filed more often with 105 suits to 34 by husbands. alimony favored wives in 6 cases. custody of minors went to wives in 28 and to husbands in 1. petitions dismissed totaled 21 for wives and 6 for husbands. 106 cases disposed of.
The weekly rate of marriage licenses plunged with only a few issued. Clergymen report pin money loss for wives, and justices face missing revenue from licenses and engraved certificates. Some blame meat prices or election tensions as contributing factors, while others see a hint of an upcoming fall wedding surge. Separately, Daniel Garrett, a B&O brakeman, was injured when a box car step collapsed near the city. He was taken to St Josephs Hospital at Lorain with non life threatening injuries. An Elyria man, Solomon Mendleson, rose from modest roots to prominence in city business. Born in Russia, he moved to the U S at age nine, apprenticed in scrap iron, then expanded into horses, meat, farms, and various enterprises. Pillavant, Elyria silk worker, recalls his family once lived near Cora Beckwith’s parents. He says her father, a swimming master, trained his eight year old daughter in the water at the lagoon. Beckwith soon surpassed her father, rarely leaving the water in daylight as a child.

A carnival tent show by the brothers features daring escape stunts and a Banda Rosa Italian act atop the Bell hardware company scene. The brothers perform a dramatic trunk escape while a partner switches places on Thursday morning as part of the carnival this city hosts with a sale on summer footwear ongoing.
At the regular Elyria Savings and Banking Co meeting held July 1, Cashier E M Rice reported a strong financial condition. Examiner H M Andress presented a detailed assets review and affirmed the bank maintains a high standard of paper. After dividends and adjustments, net earnings show 12000 in the plus account and over 2000 earned awaiting next year’s directors’ action.
The mayor issues a proclamation prohibiting scrapping confetti from streets and throwing it again, and banning the use of return robber balls. Violators face prompt arrest under the law.
The College of Agriculture and Domestic Science offers a two year free scholarship in all courses except dairying. If no applicant, the award may go to Veterinary Medicine. It covers incidental and fixed lab fees. Applications go to Lorain County Board of Agriculture secretary Anthony Neiding Elyria Ohio. Further info via a postal card to the Dean OSU Columbus. Also notes include two Lorain residents John W. Rose and D W Brill granted twenty five dollars per quarter under a blind pensions law.
