A Detroit dispatch reports Gilchrist Transportation plans a new company with about 10 million dollars in capital within ten days. It will merge with Pittsburg Steamship Co. and operate the latest fleet on inland waters, incorporating multiple Gilchrist fleet lines and naming JC Gilchrist as president with directors drawn from existing stockholders.
Mrs Marley Harley widow of the late Albert Harley died of consumption at her North Amherst home yesterday at 11 o clock. She was 40 years old and known across the county. Survived by four children Conductor John Harley Lake Shore Electric Conductor Albert Harley Brand Rebecca Harley and a married daughter in Berea. Funeral Friday at St Joseph Catholic Church North Amherst with burial in North Amherst Catholic Cemetery.
The Loram County Farmers Institute held its annual midwinter session at Ridgeville center with record attendance. Rev J P Reidinger opened, followed by remarks from President W D Warren of Wellington. Topics ranged from agriculture's role in progress to country life, water supply, and public health issues. Dr Probst warned vaccination is essential against the rising smallpox threat.
The Lorain Savings and Banking Company held its annual stockholders and directors meeting at 10 o'clock on Wednesday. The secretary-treasurer’s report showed the best results in bank history. A 15 percent dividend was declared and one percent of surplus earnings was left undivided. Officers elected: President E M Pierce. Vice Presidents Orville Root and David Wallace. John C. Sheffield father of Drs. Sheffield died at his Second Street home on Thursday morning at 8 o clock after a short illness. He was 61 and had been in frail health for three months. He came to Elyria from Bellevue where he lived many years and once served as treasurer of Huron county. Funeral at Dr E E Sheffield’s residence on Gract court at 10 Saturday morning with burial in Bellevue. Also notes a ME church reception by Epworth League with about 300 attendees and a pleasant program, tea, white decor, and palms.
Elmer Perham of near Oberlin was bound over to the grand jury under $1000 bond after allegedly committing a criminal assault on a nine year old child in Oberlin Tuesday. Kathryn Werner wed Hebert E Crandall of this city at the Methodist parsonage with Rev. Endly officiating. The couple plans a short visit before returning to 603 West Broad Street. Werner recently moved from North Amherst to work at the local telephone exchange. Crandall is a popular local businessman on Broad Street.
Herbert Lowrey formerly of Elyria, who worked for U S Express Co, was badly injured in a Massillon railroad wreck on Wednesday. He suffered a broken left collarbone and severe head lacerations. He was married to Josephine Risser, a former Reporter office employee, earlier this year.
A proposed scheme in Ohio aims to create a burial association funded by member dues and death assessments. Members pay 10 cents to join and 12 cents per death, with a burial at a cost of 1 dollar, up to 100 dollars total coverage. Eligible are healthy individuals. children under ten join at half rate, funerals offered with elaborate provisions for a low price. A watch fob found on Cheapside or Broad Street at The National Bank offers a reward.
