City council took no action on extending saloon hours despite a committee report and ready ordinance. Four councilors favor, two oppose, one undecided, with temperance leaders and ministers present to speak if called. Saloon interests blame newspaper publication for delaying passage.
Word reached Elyria that Henry H. Houghton 64 former roadmaster for the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad died last night at Kendalville Ind after a long illness from Civil War wounds at Antietam He spent much of his life in Elyria and was well liked by many Lorain County residents Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ with remains to be shipped from Kendalville a definite time pending snow cleared roads and a Thursday evening notice expected.
San Francisco reports from Manila indicate about 100 people killed in the worst typhoon to strike the islands in 16 years. Coast officers quarters at Samar were destroyed and communications with the outside world have been cut for six days. No reliable property-loss estimates available.

Mrs Caroline Gilson, longtime Sheffield township resident, died at home January 12 after nine months of illness. She was 46 and survived by eight children, including Charles, Clara, Bert, George, Irwin, Florence, Harold, and Sarah, plus sister Miss Mary Hackett and brother Jos Townsend noon. Finan’s foot crushed after slipping under a train. revived by quick action, he was taken to Loran for treatment.

Rev Reese addressed a large audience at Second Congregational Church after members brought guests to hear Some Ancestors of Those in Elyria Who Do Not Attend Church. The sermon was engaging and plans for another session were announced. A song service at 7 30 preceded Rev Reese speaking on The Devils First Question and the Mans First Sin. A chicken pie supper was served in the Congregational church tonight at 25 cents a plate.
A mob of about 500 workers gathered at Lorain after a streetcar theft attempt. William Enger, a bystander, restrained a black man named Edwin Baire of Buffalo who claimed theft of $29. Deputy Krautner arrived to avert violence, saving the suspect. The encounter ended with the crowd dispersing and Baire in police custody.
A severe snow storm and cold winds from the west are headed toward the region. Forecasters predict heavy snowfall and a sharp temperature drop this evening. The cold spell is expected to ease in a few days.
Cassie Chadwick remains in custody after a period of gloom as she refuses to eat or speak. Authorities fear her health may deteriorate while the case remains unresolved.
