Near Elyria in a rural county, Mrs. Jane Howe and her elderly uncle John Felch were terrorized by two masked burglars inside their home on a telegraph road six miles west of Elyria. Mrs. Howe, bound and gagged, resisted as robbers searched for money they believed was hidden, though none was found since funds were already deposited in a bank. Felch alerted neighbors. rescuers arrived but the robbers had fled. Mrs. Howe survived the ordeal unharmed despite the frightful events.
The Ca tawba Island fruit crop this year is expected to be small with peaches selling from 1.50 to 2 a basket and plums also high. Peach growers foresee a price drop by ten cents before a rise in coming weeks due to higher demand. One grower with 1,800 bushels last year aims for 300 this season while grape yields look poor from reduced sap in vines due to excessive pruning.
Five carloads of crushed limestone arrived in Medina this week and crews began placing it on the Burnham road starting at the fork of the Branch and York roads. The stone haul has created about 200 yards of pike. An order for 300 carloads of stone has been issued from the Bluffton quarry and will be shipped soon to accelerate work in York Lafayette and Montville.
The Lake Shore anticipates mid September arrival of fourteen new fast passenger engines. The plan is to first use them on freight duties for about a week, then run the Lake Shore flyers between Buffalo and Chicago. The railroad aims to be prepared for any speed competition.
The National Stove Company expands its Lorain plant by purchasing Dayton Stove Works, bringing the National Ensurance gasoline stove and Dayton patterns. Walter R Woodford was elected president and general manager by New York directors for the Cleveland Lorain and Wheeling Railroad. Thieves exploited the firemen’s convention chaos during the Wednesday parade to break into Mrs. Gregg’s west Fourth street home and Charles Spring’s east Fifth street residence. They pried a screen door with a chisel, stealing about $4 in cash and jewelry worth roughly 28, while throwing the interiors into disarray.
Cars run on a ten minute schedule between the loop and the steel plant. The service is a great convenience to the public and could be made permanent if patronage warrants it.

Deputy Salisbury arrested three gamblers at Wellington's fair grounds and main street. All pleaded guilty before Justice Bowen, paid fines, and left town. Sheriff Warden aided, leading to a broader cleanup as reforms reassure law abiding residents.
