Obituary notes William Patterson an early pioneer and two term county commissioner who served as justice of the peace in Carlisle township. Survived by four children Dr. F N Patterson of Baltimore Mrs Mary Camp Mrs Angie Herdman and Dr Ed Patterson. He was widely respected in the county.
Captain Polo calls all old members of Company A Fifth O V I to meet Sunday at the G A R hall Lorain. They will plan participation in unveiling the soldiers monument in Lorain Public Square and join a Cleveland veterans meeting during the G A R encampment.
In Oberlin on Tuesday afternoon a triple wedding was held. HH. W. Stiles and Mise Elizabeth Cheney married at the bride’s Cedar avenue home, with Professor H. W. King officiating. The party then moved to the Stiles home on North Professor Avenue where Rev. B. R. Cheney tied the knot for Miles B. Fisher and Irene R. Stiles, and for Ralph L. Cheney with Miss Gertrude E. Stiles. All but Mr Fisher are Oberlin college graduates. a large reception followed. Samuel Squires of Oberlin was in town on legal business Monday. his wife is the daughter of a Revolutionary soldier, a short life sketch of her was published recently in the Reporter.
J W Voglesong returned from Brighton Beach where he served as clerk of the course for a historic meet. Ores eus defeated the Abbot to set a new world trotting mark while 26 000 paid admissions plus 600 reserved seats crowded the Seaside grandstand. Purses totaled 365 000 as track officials were paid for the first time, with a 2.0314 mile by Cresents and a 2.0134 by Anaconda as the ocean breeze kept the track springy and fast.
The Cohoes Waterford Telephone company was incorporated in Albany with H Goswold of Elyria named as a key figure. The Schenectady Home Telephone company also formed with 250 000 capital. Directors include B Rawson T M Brash I H Grinwold J A Dake F H Sudro A E Lord and E M Brash, all of Elyria, with others in Albany. Dake Sudro and Rawson also direct the Elyria Telephone.
Elyria's mayor attempted a ride along a rugged cascade park route, steering a wagon that proved too steep for horse and carriage. The team toppled, the mayor was pinned briefly, comrades and a doctor arrived to free him, and both horse and wagon emerged unharmed.
A valued horse stolen from Gibbs farm Carlisle August 26 1898 was found in Sullivan Ashland County. The thief C W Shaver was captured with a threshing gang at Clarksfield and held on $500 bond. The horse is back at Gibbs farm.
The twenty third annual Soldiers and Sailors reunion was held at Cascade Park on Friday August 16 with about 250 in attendance in the forenoon and more after dinner. Dr Beefy Elyria mayor opened the meeting and Charles Chandler read and adopted last meeting minutes from 1899. Officers for the coming year were elected led by President Charles Chandler and Secretary Treasurer Andy Parsons with a long list of vice presidents from many towns. The motion to place arrangements back under president and secretary passed, and comrades urged greater attendance at future reunions.
The Willoughby firm sues the American Shovel and Stamping Co for 160000 in damages over a leased fork machinery dispute. The case involves breach of contract claims, attached property, and replevin history with bids of 2470 appraisal and 5000 bond. Attorneys H. W. Ingersoll for the plaintiff and E. G. Johnson for the defendant.
A Wurst grocery store endured a late evening blaze the sixth in months. Firemen battled flames from a back room bench and shelves with one firefighter injured by broken glass. damage under $500 and insured through W B Johnston. The origin remains uncertain with a mouse and match theory considered.
