He remembers Elyria’s first fair and early landmarks near the river and the site of the future National Bank, inviting readers to a quiet reminiscence with the aging settler.

The Marine Record notes a giant drainage canal from Chicago into the Mississippi would move 300000 cubic feet of water per minute, with potential for 600000. This could drop lake levels by two to four inches at times and reduce harbor depths, though river environments would be unaffected. Government help to Chicago could in turn aid ports on the lakes facing any injury.
