A Saturday 4 o'clock runaway on Cheapside caused panic as a mad horse dragged a covered buggy and a Spring wagon with two children. Mrs. Thompkings saved the children, was injured, later treated. a pocketbook with $37.40 was lost and later found to belong to another. Damages were sought and police cleared the street.
Word came yesterday of the murder of Robert Finley son of Captain P A Finley of Elyria. Finley a Montana yardmaster was shot by a man he had discharged. the shooter is said to have been driven insane by his firing. Finley a prominent Odd Fellow, and his parents mourn his loss as the family’s primary support. Elyria L O T M asks all members to attend the next meeting Tuesday evening August 5 for important business.
The Elyria Canning Company operates as a busy city establishment, with string beans and baked beans leading demand. Orders near 1000 cases and four and a half barrel loads for tomatoes indicate robust summer and winter production, under Mr. C. McDonald with 60 to 70 workers kept busy by steady orders.
Chas J Crehore and Geo H Chamberlain of Elyria Brick & Tile Co went to Cleveland Monday and secured a proposal from a leading sewer contractor to purchase six million bricks as fast as shipped. The order would fill six hundred catloads per car daily for two years, indicating a large production push. The deal marks a significant milestone for the plant.
John A. Berry, a young colored man, sues West Broad street saloonkeeper William Wagner under Section 4426 seeking $300 damages for allegedly denying him a beer due to his race. Justice Chas. C. Lord will rule within days on whether Berry can recover for denial of equal privileges.
The City Restaurant, long run by Mr. A. P. Sheldon, was purchased by Mrs. J. C. MacDonald after talks lasting some time. The deal closed last Monday night with assistance from E. A. Police suspect an expert gang carried out two city home burglaries early Tuesday. At J K Fry residence on Middle Avenue thieves pried a pantry window, ransacked Mr Fry’s trousers for cash, and left about $100 found in pockets. Nearby the Dunham home was hit through a parlor window with Mr and Mrs Dunham asleep. Officers found clues and pursue the leads.
Chas Lilly was struck by a Lake Shore train in the neat side yards and thrown from the track. He sustained severe bruises and cuts and one arm dislocated at the elbow. He was taken to Dr Hart’s office where Drs Hart and Cushing dressed his wounds.
Charles Cahoon is appointed constable to fill the unexpired term of Harry Braman, who resigned. The appointment is praised as sound and Cahoon is expected to perform his duties faithfully.
A significant decision is due in Lorain as the sale of the brass works property progresses. The purchase by Lorain parties is expected to close within days, tying into broader plans for bicycle and automobile production on the site.
Reports indicate Mrs Stolzenbergs suffered a broken hand previously and, during a recent fall, Mrs Stolzenights injured her right leg. The incidents left both women bruised and laid up for some time.
An Oberlin scientist says he trapped a genuine kissing bug after days of search. The insect allegedly tried to bite a young woman, leaving a sting in her collar. The specimen will be sent to government labs for identification.

Wednesday morning two prisoners fled while being moved near the depot. One boarded a passing freight train while the other disappeared after fetching a pail of water. Earlier this week another pair escaped, leaving authorities on the lookout.
Nineteen retail dealers in Lorain County paid a total cigarette tax of 292.62 dollars for trafficking. The state will receive one half of the amount.

Mist County Auditor Lewis made this year’s first semi annual settlement with the state auditor last Monday morning. The county remitted 16 098.04 dollars to the state treasury. The ease and promptness reflect well on his handling of office and earned congratulations from the Auditor of State.

At seven this morning a bareheaded boy jumped from an electric car in Oberlin, bought a cap, and bought a ticket to New York City. Deputy Sheriff Sailsbury intercepted him at Elyria and held him for investigation after he said he was tired of Oberlin restaurant work and had borrowed money to travel. The boy, about 16, gave unclear reasons and traveled with a companion toward Cleveland.
A government portal inspector inspects the Geneva Ohio rural region for delivery expansion. A favorable report is expected and mail service to suburban homes could begin in about one month. The area covers most of Geneva township and a western Saybrook strip.

The A. J. Roac Company is negotiating for a factory in the Northwest. Company members, when seen by a Gazette representative yesterday, were reticent to discuss the matter beyond confirming the fact.
The Holyin fire department memos show great interest in the county firemen's convention on August 2. Volunteer companies from various towns arrive with their bands, promising all day music. The Holyia team plans to entertain visitors in fine style, with a committee seeking business and citizen support to ensure a liberal response and strong encouragement.
The Lorain county Republican executive committee at a regular meeting the first of the week instructed the chairman to recommend to Secretary of State Chas. Kenney the name of George C. Prince of Oberlin for appointment as a member of the Deputy Board of Election Supervisors in place of Dr. Moffat of Avon whose term has expired.
Funeral held at M. and M. church for Levi Morse with Rev Endry and others paying tribute. Morse, born Prospect Connecticut 1813, settled Elyria in 1850s, first ticket agent for Lake Shore and Michigan Southern, long trusted public official, husband of Betsy Mann, father of six, interred at Ridgelawn with Odd Fellows service.
